Bind and Immobilize

I just fired up the crock pot for its inaugural supper. Y'all gave me some amazing recipes to pick from. I hope to try all of them at least once. Someone sent me over to the Kraft web site for recipes and this one caught my eye. It looks so yummy! My boys will be tearing into bbq pork sandwiches tonight at about the time I will leave for the gym. My stomach will be growling by then, but at least when I get home to my long-awaited dinner, my metabolism will be revved up.

Speaking of the gym, I have recently concluded that my twice-weekly workout schedule isn't cutting it. Nope. This month, me and my metabolism are turning 28. It looks like I will be spending twice as much time at the gym this next year because my current routine is not keeping the weight off. I really enjoy my step aerobics classes, but they are only offered twice a week at my Bally's. Stink. So that means I have to use the machines. *Scream* On Monday I did a mile on the elliptical and then ran a mile on the treadmill. Fun times, y'all. Have I mentioned before how much I hate running? I really need to get some good songs on my Ipod. Which brings me to this: what kind of ear do-dahs do I get for working out? Those things that come with the Ipod don't even stay in my ears when I'm walking. Any suggestions are appreciated. But please keep in mind that I don't want to look like a big dork at the gym.

Okay, if there are any men reading right this, they can bow out now. Something has really been bothering me in my aerobics class lately. There seems to be a tragic lack of support. I'm not talking about moral support. One third to one half of the women in my class do not wear sports bras. It is wrong, very wrong. Ladies, these things should not be. Your Bettys do not need to be bouncin'. It seems to me that any time you put on your tennis shoes, you should just go ahead and put on a sports bra. And if you are a C cup or more, you really need to wear two. If you're only walking, you can get away with one. But anything more? Definitely two. In my early days of post-partum aerobics, I wore three. You do what you gotta do, ladies. Bind them up! Forget lift and separate. We're going for bind and immobilize. And if you hate the uni-boob look, then wear a regular bra and put your sports bra over it. That will help you out a bit. (Although you can get underwire sports bras now. And sometimes you don't need to double-up with those.)

I just don't understand why anyone taking a class in which they climb a step over and over again for 45 minutes would do it without proper support. I've been quietly thinking about this for months, but on Tuesday there was such a flagrant bra foul that I couldn't keep quiet any longer. There's a lady in my class who appears to have been trained in dance. She has a cute dancer's figure, wears jazz shoes and very unathletic clothing, keeps her hair down, and wears full makeup. On Tuesday she came in looking adorable as always. I noticed that she had on a loose cotton halter top. And it became apparent to me that she was wearing a strapless bra underneath. A strapless bra. To aerobics. To a class that requires you to bounce up and down off a step device a thousand times. I cannot even fathom it.

Bless her heart, my classmate desperately needs a Titus woman to mentor her in proper breast care. While I could never talk openly with the ladies in my class about such things, I can help spread the message of binding and immobilizing to my bloggy friends. And that is my mission today. Here is a simple article about why you should be wearing a sports bra. There are many, many types to choose from and they come in all price ranges. So do your girls a favor and bind up your Bettys!

I am sitting here dying laughing. I don't even think that is accurate enough! At my gym I am just wondering why the women in there 50's plus are wearing just a sports bra and no shirt (It is an all womens gym btw). It is not the best site. I would not have done that in my best shape 10 years ago much less. Then I have noticed with some that the spandex pants are making a come back. I don't know where they got them from but I just figured I'd throw that in that while we are on the gym subject. I won't be participating in the spandex and no woodstock comeback at the gym...that has to hurt!!

ps those pictures from the fair look like the gym is doing you fine. You are a little bitty thing!!! :)

Oh dear, I am LAUGHING so hard at this, mainly b/c I have had the SAME thoughts in my head quite often about the bra-situation!!!

and YES MA'AM- support those girls, we need no help getting those babies to head South as we get older as it is...hold 'em up for your own sake (and everyone else around you!!) I just wish I had enough to require more than one sports bra!! :) Oh well, you get what the sweet Lord gives you!!

I know what you mean abotu needing more gym time, I just upped my workouts to 5-6 a week (from 3) and I am feeling a little better.

I am running in my first 5K this Sat. (so say a prayer for me!) and I am going to be doing an Avon 2-day 40 mile walk in April (whew- I am tired thinking of it!)

About the iPod earbuds...yeah, they fall out of my ears, I went to Target and got these earplugs called Jellys (I think) anyways, they are soft and fit inside your ear (and there not SUPER-expensive like some of them), so they don't fall out and you get great sound-not that jostling noise when thier loose. They come in all the same colors as the ipods (b/c we HAVE to match at the gym, right?) HAHA!

Hope your increse in workouts go well...I think I have officially become a gym-rat- everyone that works there now knows mine and Sara's name!! oh well, at least I am TRYING to do something for my waistline!

That's it. I'm getting a new sports bra. Lately, mine has really been letting me down. Today we did jumping jacks in the kickboxing class, and it abandoned me.

I will definatley keep that in mind next time I go to excercise. Your're a great looking lady so keep up the good work!!!!;)

i guess i need to wear four bras.... girl I cannot deal with my betties on a normal day basis....boucing in gym class, that is crossing the line!

I started running 2 months ago, and I know what you mean about the ipod earphones, they are useless when working out. We use Sony that are the ear buds but have wrap around the ear part if that makes sense. They are not big and goofy, fairly small and work great for running!

Unknown said...

Oh and the earbuds...I have nothing to offer. I'm the dorky looking one when it somes to them!

Megan O. said...

Ok, I think after reading your post that its time to move on up to wearing 2 sports bras during aerobics. I was in a kickboxing class a couple weeks ago and caught sight of myself in the mirror mid-leap and it wasn't pretty. I guess I just never considered wearing 2 bras because when I'm not nursing its not even close to an issue. Thanks for enlightening us!

Kelly said...

You are so funny. Since I can't remember the last time I made it to the gym ....I haven't seen a lot of bra fouls lately - but I hate when people come to work out like they are about to go out for dinner - big hair and cute coordinated outfit. I have on my t-shirts from 10 years ago and unflattering crop pants and sports bras make me look like a little boy since I'm already flat.
Thanks for getting this off your chest (literally).

Fran said...

I don't like anyone that has to wear more than one sports bra!! :)
Its just not fair....

Yep...bind and immobilize them Betty's. It doesn't matter your age. It should be a requirement.

That was good stuff today. I'm gonna go check out the crockpot recipie. Happy Eating!

Unknown said...

Bound Betties here! I am with you, although I am only a B cup, so one sport bra is enough. Although I go to a co-ed gym and I would like to add one thing to your post. Ladies, when you are working out, please remember that other womans husbands are in the gym too! I felt awful for this Trainer who had a very beautiful woman wearing a trendy workout shirt...low cut, high in the waist. Seriously, I thought "Thank God my husband works out at home...I would hate for him to have to deal with this!"
I prefer to wear a loose fitting t-shirt over my sport bra, although when it is extremely hot I do wear tank tops...yes usually two, over the sport bra. Gotta bind and cover them!

You're hilarious...and inspiring. Man, if I had just been so determined to get the FIRST child weight off, then I wouldn't be working on three of the four right now. You GO Girl!

Speaking of weight loss...hmmm...well, not really, I stopped in to tell you I posted two really good recipes I know you will enjoy!
Keep up the wonder-FULL-y bound posts!

Underwire only for me. The gals just are not comfortable otherwise.

I love step class and also take spin and weight classes at our gym. I am not very motivated on my own. I need the loud music and someone barking orders to get a good workout. I will dawdle , day dream and smack dab do nothing if left to my own devices.

Darlene R. said...

I definately have to double up! I wear a regular bra and my sports bra that is a size smaller than what I would normally wear. Buying a size smaller helps a bunch. You can only do this if you double up though. Otherwise, you will get unsightly overflowage (is that a word?)!! And that is a whole nother issue!!

debra parker said...

I promise when I go to the gym...the sports bra will be my companion.

This is just a crazy reminder that I need to throw myself into a gym....

Amanda,
You do not know me, but we have some mutual friends and I have been reading your blog for months. But, I am just now brave enough to leave a comment. Well, about the ear doodads. :) My hubby gave me an ipod for my birthday (I work out at the YMCA). The ear doodads that came with it killed my ears for some reason. We looked at Best Buy (or any electronic store probably) and they had these squishy foamy type ear doodads that workd wonderfully. They form to your ears and stay put while running or on the elyptical. Well, I hope this helps.
Oh, just for grins, I am 28, my husband is on staff at a church as well, and I have an 18 month old daughter (along with a 3 year old). Your blogs crack me up and can totally relate to your topics of choice. Keep up the writing!!!! :)
Have a great day!!!!

It's me again. Google Philips Earbuds. Those are the ones I use for running. They work well. I got them at Walmart for like 15.00.

I'm definitely laughing OUT LOUD in the library! (Betty's!!??? LOL!) That's a new one for me. They've just always been 'the girls.'

For anyone who can't keep up their laundry enough to wear 4 sports bras at once (I can't...), go here: http://title9.stores.yahoo.net/bras---undies.html
(Or just google 'Title Nine'.) They have sports bras that are rated by 'barbells' 1-4 for support. I use their sports bras and they really ... what did you call it Amanda? ... bind and immobilize! lol

For the adorable woman in the strapless bra, bless her heart. Amanda, maybe you can ask her what brand it is, b/c I can't ever find a strapless bra that will stay on when I'm standing still! :)

Oh Amanda. You are so stinkin' funny. I guess that's why I love reading your blog so much. I have to pay special attention to my "girls" when working out otherwise I'd have two black eyes!! Not a pretty picture.

If you find a good solution to the Ipod earbuds, let me know. I have such trouble with them too.

Love ya my siesta,

Try all the earphone types your store offers until you find the one that fits your ear. That's what I had to do. My husband I are at odds as to what type we like so we have our own (sharing would be gross) and they are totally different.
I hear ya on the sports bra thing. However I do believe I need to replace mine. It's been a long time since I purchased one. Also, have you tried spinning? I absolutely loved spinning in college, I can't do step because of my knees but spinning was fun.

It was just this morning that I was madly packing my workout bag (while running my usual late to work) and I couldn't find that dang sports bra FOR ANYTHING. I came THIS CLOSE to bagging it (the bra, not the workout). But then I decided it was worth being a few minutes late to work since I really, really must wear one, and today my trainer's husband is subbing for her!

I won't even mention what I'm sure your mom has already told you about the joys of trying to even HAVE a metabolism (much less trying to rev one up) in your 40's...

Good Job for adding that extra workout day! :)

between the laughs, i'm so thankful someone said something about this. when i was at carolina, it was ridiculous because me and the roomie would show up in sweatpants and a t-shirt and there would be some with not much more than you see at the pool in the summer! even though college students typically still have everything "up", we still don't need to see it!

good luck with the crock pot dinner!! :)

Oh girl...

I didn't see this post until now; and I think I was right to think that I am going to try to walk after I get home from work in the morning(Yes, I know I do physical stuff at overnight, but its just not cutting it).

If you may be remember I quit walking at night because My Pastor and his wife caught me, and I got a lecture for it two different days...so with that said lol.

I want to lose weight and look cute again, I am a year behind you with my metabolism which turns 27 on Nov. 11th.

What happen to the easy days? We weren't supposed to feel old already:(

As far as the sports bras, I just have issues altogether, my momma says be proud of what I got, but I just wish I would have somekind of support.

Somewhere between 18-24 it all went down hill from there.(Literally lol)

Have a great day girlie:)

Amanda, take care of your Bettys because when you reach Grandmamitzi's age your Bettys can become flat Stanley's (also depending on how many children you will Bettyfeed). thanks for the post it was so funny.

Oh, Amanda. You crack me up. Although I do agree with you heartily.:)
I read while I walk our treadmill. No earplugs for me! I put one hand on the handrail and the other hand on the book! In fact - I'm reading "Get Out of That Pit" right now. With kids - it works for me. Otherwise I'd never get any reading done! Only downside is when I go to underline something it's kind of jittery...:)

Surely the Bettys are bound in aerobics heaven -- and what's bound there should be bound on earth, right? I seem to remember hearing that somewhere.

My favorite line: Forget lift and separate. We're going for bind and immobilize.

Classic, Amanda. That's pure gold.

Yep, I am glad you're wising up. How many times did your mother tell you and Melissa to support yourselves when you ran up and down our stairs unhindered? Every bounce breaks tissue, Girls! And how many times have I told your Daddy while we were people watching at the mall that women need a seminar on wearing the right bra? (I don't know why I told your daddy. He doesn't need one. I just needed someone to tell but now at least you've offered an outlet.) I am a firm believer that the right bra can keep things a whole lot firmer. While we're breaking free in some areas, we need to be plenty bound up in others.

And I love your community of bloggers, AJ. They are so funny. I wish I could have all of you in my den for some homemade hot chocolate one cool day. We'd laugh and talk our heads off and we older women would hug you younger women and tell you how good you're doing and how proud we are of you.

I AGREE. AND I AM A TRIPLE D.

And that is why I bought this...

http://www.ladiesonlysports.com/enwhenyouare.html

It was plugged by Oprah on her show as "the best sports bra ever". There will always be a little bounce there due to size, but it is, by far, the best sports bra I've ever tried. It's worth the investment.

After nursing 3 kids for a total of 4.5 years... my Betty's are measuring closer to the back half of the alphabet and I understand the need for support. We never leave home w/out steel girded reinforcement and we just do not do anything that requires bouncin'!

Heavens...your aerobics class would probably leave me knocked unconcious on the floor w/two black eyes and a broken nose!

That was a great commentary! Binding up one's betty's ought to be required for step areobics for sure. I always wonder who the people are in the lives of those who make such flagrant mistakes (you know like trying out for American Idol when they can't sing a lick, or going to areobics class braless)....I always think, don't they have a momma? Because a momma would tell a gal the truth, don't cha think?

This is so funny, but SO TRUE!!! I'm always so self-conscience about the "betty's" and avoid the gym at all cost because of it. But since the last 10 pounds aren't coming off at home, maybe I should double up the support and give it a try.

Thanks Amanda for making me laugh today!!

I actually do wear two bras. A regular one with a sports bra over it. That's a good hold. I started doing that when I was nursing and I just continued to do so. Three? That sounds like a lot but there are a lot of women with a lot more to hold down then me, so do what works! By the way, Amanda, you are funny. Love that minds of yours!

Either way, the thought of letting the girls go free in an aerobics class makes me cringe. Good for you for taking the lead in becoming the newest TBM (Titus Breast Mentor). Somebody's gotta do it. :)
