Jackson Antics

Jackson is having one of his little growing up spurts. A few days ago he said, "I love you too" to his daddy for the first time and "Bless you!" to me after I sneezed. It was so fun.

I know he is at the stage where I need to start letting him "help" me with things. That will be a nice growing experience for this recovering perfectionist/control freak. On the day of his verbal enlightenment, we went shopping and I, having been moved by his big boy-ness, let him carry a bag into the house for me. He was so happy with himself. Just about every afternoon he and I go to the mailbox and he helps me retrieve the junk mail, bills, and occasional card or birthday party invitation. Now he gets upset if we go out the front door but don't get the mail.

Since Jackson doesn't have any siblings or cousins in town that he has to share with, we still have a really long way to go on that. (He's currently learning with Keegan and Jayk.) While we were in San Antonio Curt came up with "High five for sharing!" Jackson loved it and henceforth I shall confess that my husband is a parenting genius. We'll see if it sticks. I'm not sure it's as effective coming from me.

Speaking of that, Curt and Jackson have a secret handshake. I guess it's not much of a secret since they do it right in front of me. It's more like their special thing that I am not allowed to participate in. I have been known to make Jackson do it with me, but I always get in trouble. He understands now that it's only for daddy and he rejects me in my moments of rebellion. Curt confessed today that it's rooted in him feeling a little left out by all the time I spent one-on-one with Jackson while I nursed him. They needed a thing. Well, thank God, I no longer have that thing with Jackson, so what is my thing now? I'm sure we have one. I just need to think on it. Maybe a mom doesn't need a thing.

Please allow me now to share our favorite Jackson saying, which is "Dip it." He went through a few weeks when he said "Dip it" non-stop throughout the day. It sounds like "Dep it." "Dip it" is applied when he dips his waffles into a small bowl of syrup, tortilla chips into salsa, french fries into ketchup, etc. Hands down, one of the best parts of parenting is getting to hear your kid's speech develop. The process of them trying out a new phrase in a hundred different scenarios is highly entertaining. My previous favorite might have been "It's stuck!" Right now Jackson is constantly telling me that something is "broken" or "broke it." Now back to "dip it." Curt and I have taken over this phrase, to the point that we say it more than Jackson. If I ask Curt what he thinks we should do on Saturday, he might answer, "Dip it."

Jackson hit a huge and memorable milestone yesterday. He approached me with poop covered hands and said, "Stinky! Mommy, stinky!" That's going in the baby book, folks. It was sick and he's lucky I didn't vomit on those stinky hands, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. We are at a stage right now where if I let him run around without pants or shorts on over his diaper, that thing gets stripped off or, apparently, dug around in. We have been very lucky so far not to have any disasters, but I am done tempting fate! Lesson learned!

  1. "Dip it" totally sounds like the next hip-hop phrase. I'm adopting it early so I sound cool.

  2. Yuck-o on the stinky hands! I am gagging with you! The dip-it was so cute! I feel myself speaking 2 year old more than I should!

It'll get better! My Noah is a year ahead of Jackson, and as we are working diligently on potty training, we have mastered peeing in the toilet and keeping our pants dry, but Noah is scared to death that if he sits on the toilet to poop, it'll make a big splash and get his bottom all wet with toilet water...so, he still poops--DAILY--in his underwear...I was letting him wear pull-ups until he'd pooped each morning, but I'm honestly sick of buying the things, so I just dump the turd out of his underwear into the toilet (he usually tells me as soon as he's done because he doesn't want to sit in it), and then I throw the underwear into the washer and run it through in hot water...the whole time complaining about how he needs to sit on the potty and how mommy WISHES she didn't have to dump his poop in the potty for him!

So, this morning, Noah comes skipping over to me (with nothing on the bottome--all of a sudden), shouting, "Mommy! I did it! I put the poo-poo in the potty!" Excitedly, I run to the bathroom, hoping to see that he's climbed up on the toilet and pooped right there in it (miracle of miracles!)--but instead, I realize, he did put his poop in the potty--by himself--when he dumped it out of his 4T Diego briefs! I guess I can be thankful he didn't get his hands in it!

  4. These are some hysterical stories! How wonderful that you'll have them to share with Jackson when he gets older! You are really capturing some very special memories for your son on this blog.

I love husband-wife special inside joke phrases. I think it's one of the most fun parts of marriage. At our house it's usually lines from The Office...I can't even imagine the fun we'll have when we start having children and they start talking.

  5. I posted a picture a while back that I dare not link to... but right after my daughter turned two (!) decided to do a little finger painting one morning. She didn't use paint and it was dee-sgusting. That's all I'm going to say about that!

With you talking about all of Jackson's new talking skillz, I just have to know... does he have a cute little Texas accent? Because I think there is nothing cuter than kids with accents. Melts mah lil' ol' heart! (Okay, I so do not have an accent.)

  6. Sounds like he got a combo lesson there: diaper exploration plus "Dip it!"

(I gagged a little, and I wasn't even there. You rock!)

(Hey! Maybe that's your thing with Jackson?!?)

  7. A friend of mine walked in on her daughter with a messy, stinky mouth. I'll let you figure out what was in it! That's just disgusting. Needless to say, I haven't kissed her daughter lately!
So, it could've been worse "but it was bad enough!
    "Dip it"~ so cute!

  8. Love the "Dip it!" Hilarious!!

My almost 2 year old (in 5 days) cracks me up when he says his siblings names. "Hhhanah" with a big "hha" in front for Hannah, "Jojo" for his bro Joseph, "Rarah" for Sarah and the kicker..."Kaka" for Rebekah. I am hoping we grow out of that one soon!! :)

  9. I'm going to have that 80's "Whip It Good" song in my head all night now. :0) "Dip it" just reminded me of that!

  10. A good friend of mine's little boy would "paint" his walls during nap time with his poo. She had to make him wear onsies for naptime so he couldn't get in the diaper to be picaso during naptime :) At least you didn't have wall paintings waiting on you ...

Our boys love to help wash dishes. My hubby does the dishes after I cook and he will bring the step stool to the sink and let each boy wash the dish they ate out of. They think it is a hoot ... I hope this sticks b/c in a few years all the dishes will be their responsibility! It's fun when our kids can help us out ... slows the process sometimes but fun still.

This post brought back so many memories of when Chase was that age...and when he was about 2 years old, realizing he would be an only child, we made a decision to raise him in such a way that no one would ever say "you can tell he is an only child".

It was, and continues to be, very purposeful...and so far it seems as if we have been successful. As he will be turning 17 in September (is that possible?) - it appears that we may have been successful - as we watch him grown and began that eventual separation from us. God is so good!

  12. By all means, cover the diaper. I found my 2 year old (who is now 6) 'fingerpainting' one time in our living room with the 'stuff' from her diaper. Not pretty! I have a very weak stomach and an intense gag reflex. On the other hand, she was having the best time!

  13. I loved this post! I am a fan of "Dip it." That's great! I especially like that you are a recovering control freak. That's a hard thing to overcome...trust me, I know!

  14. I couldn't help but hear Jackson's new phrase "Dip it" to the 80's song "Whip It"!

  15. Aren't they just precious?! My daughter will be three in September but last summer she went through a stage where every single time I put her in her crib to nap or sleep, she would strip down naked. I resorted to the light weight footed sleepers that zip up so I could put them on her backward and zip them up the back. Crazy as it sounds, it worked and kept her from getting naked. Because let me tell you--what started out as cute became super annoying when I had to clean that kind of mess up every time!

  16. when do we get a vacation update? Where are you? :) Are you "depping it" in the carribean or perhaps sea world?

  17. You have not lived until he takes said sinky and paints you a picture on the wall (or in the case of my sweet little GIRL, the sliding glass door!!!). That is milestoe not to be missed!

But, I agree, I love to hear the sweet little voices learning to talk. My 9 month old just learned her first word this week - Dada. And, as much as I thought I would resent hearing his name first, it melts my heart EVERY time. And he deserves it!

  18. "Dep it" is a common phrase we hear around here too! Everyone in our family now says, "manos" cause that's how Caleb says "matos."
My hubbie has planted a few "mano" plants and every day Caleb asks, "check-a manos!"
    I just love this stage!

We were fortunate eonough not to have the poop experience, but when mine were younger, I was determined to go potty with out one of them barging in the restroom, so I locked the door. In the mere two minutes that I was in the bathroom, the two year old covered the one year old in desitin. My child looked like Casper the Firendly Ghost. I wish I had a picture of that!!! He smelled like "butt cream" (that is what my husband taught them to call it) for days, regardless of how many times we bathed him:)

  20. Maybe Curt should title his next book "Dip It: A Father's Guide to Cleaning Stinky Hands"

Just a suggestion. Poop on the hands? UGH! Why do they do that?

Our daughter who is now almost 32 had beautiful curly hair... she decided to decorate her room, walls (they were paneled) and herself one afternoon when she was supposed to be taking a nap. What a disaster that was!

Our little grandson who is almos two is very verbal and it does give you a chuckle... yesterday he was singing "holy, holy, holy in the back seat of my car. And I am Dam instead of Gram:)

I raised two boys as well as a daughter and they all had the "handshake" thing with their Daddy... our special thing was stories... we made them up and it's something I have continued with the grandchildren.

Congratulations to you all for the new Mens Devotional.

  22. Sounds like Jackson might be applying the word "dip it" in many different ways... :)

You are great parents, Amanda. Really great...I love the intention behind your relationship with your son. It honors the Lord so much!

    With love,

  23. The poopy hands a two year old thing or what? My kids either one of them never were ones to play in their diapers, but just the other day my little guy, Bentley, came to me and said "mommy I need a wipe fease (please)". When I turned around there he was standing with a hand full of poop lifted up to me!!!!!!!
Oh the joys of little boys!!!!

I loved that time with my little one (who is now 5, OMG). She sounds too grown up now. When we moved to our new home, near the river, 3 years ago we had lots of crickets in the backyard. My then 2 year old used to tell her Mimi (Grandma) all about the "ickets by da ibber". As a family joke we still say it when we're playing in the yard and see a cricket. Enjoy every minute with your little one.

  25. And lets hope he never decides to play race cars through the poop with his baby brother one day. (My horrible experience...and unforuntaly on more than one occasion.) Thanks for sharing the sweet stories! It's fun to watch little Jackson grow.

  26. Hey Amanda! Your site meter might show that you had someone looking at your blog for hours and hours...it was me. Only, I ran out of the house really quick and left your page on my browser. It did not take me five hours to read about Jackson's new words! (Dip it was so cute!)
Anyway, I just didn't want you to think I was a crazy stalker person:)

  27. Gracious me that is so sweet!
Kids crack me up with what they say and you are right to cherish each sweet saying

My Cole found a big bouncy ball today and was sitting on it trying to bounce when he turned to me and said "I think I have the heck of it!"

I died laughing and said "you mean the hang of it!" -LOL
    God bless

  28. PRECIOUS!! There are few things as precious as when they start speaking. Oh, and it doesn't stop. Ever. Car rides are the noisest now and JD feels the need to repeat everything twice. I think it's the beginning of OCD for him.

And so sorry about the poopy hands. That is GROSS! Boys are really just gross when it comes to poop. It seems to fascinate them more than girls. To this day JD still thinks his poop is cool. Right now we are currently fighting his need to poop outside. Like the dogs. That's a lot of fun.

  30. You are right, hearing your child's language develop is a huge perk in parenting. It's just so cute...everything they say! I wish I could hear Jackson say "dip it" in person. Maybe in a few weeks!

Ava smeared her poopy diaper all over her crib & bedding the other morning. All I knew to do was strip her, and carry her to stand in my shower alone while I came up with a plan for clean-up.

  34. I totally understand about the 'secret handshake' with daddy!! I have 2 boys (5 and 7)that have secret handshakes with daddy...way coller than a secret handshake with mommy! I am blessed by their sweet relationship with their daddy, but I can feel a tiny bit jealous over the handshakes! But I think mommys are so cool they don't even need a 'thing'...I do have the privilage and blessing of homeschooling our boys...so there ya go...I taught them to READ...a major life skill! I also got to be there when my now 7 year old asked Jesus to be his Savior...MAJOR 'thing'!! So, see Mamas are so special we don't need a handshake...just a sweet mooch on the cheek from our little gifts!!

Guess who is coming to your old town - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK! You and Melissa should plan a sisters only trip and come....
I took my younger sister, because my parents made me, to NKOB back in 1991. I am very tempted to buy her tickets for her birthday present. But, I don't think her hubby, who is 14 years older than her, would be amused or go with her and I don't want to go again.
Anyway, sorry this comment isn't about your cute kiddo. But, I couldn't resist!
    Enjoy your weekend.
