Retraction

Minutes before I published that last post, Annabeth wet her pants while playing at the bathroom sink. I wasn't too alarmed but we then proceeded to regress in our potty training in every single way except for one - she is now waking up dry. But she is suddenly afraid of the same thing that so hindered my son's potty training for 6 months. *Sigh* It's fun times. My dear friend Kristy once told me she was much happier once she decided that undies are disposable. I am definitely in agreement.

In other news, my fro-yo addiction from last summer is long gone. This is my new love.

I present to you the Rolo McFlurry.

YES, undies are TOTALLY disposable!!! :)

Girl, you know how I feel about the RMcF. And I used to throw underwear away faster than you could say "skid marks."

Haha, Jen, that is funny! Yes, freedom in disposable panties..this too shall pass! Take a break, go get a McFlurry! I am!

Hang in there, Amanda!
She will come around. Be patient!
I remember throwing out a multitude of panties -- a lot easier that way.

So sorry to hear of your frustrations with the PT. Your AB reminds me of my just-turned 2-year-old daughter who also happens to be the most stubborn child on the face of the planet (or maybe the 2nd most...I haven't met your AB) knows exactly what she's doing with regard to going potty, but she REFUSES to go in the potty. So I really took hope from your last post and may have to try the method you use if we don't see progress by age 2.5. Keep me posted on AB's progress!

Side note, I have a 5-year-old son and his potty-training was pretty typical at age 3. I had a miserable first week during that time but after the 2nd week, I considered him fully potty-trained. Hang in there! Best PT advice I ever got for my son: once you start, don't go back!

I hate potty training. What is so scary about pooping in a potty, anyway? It was a nightmare with my oldest and I am not looking forward to doing it again. And I so wanted to love the Rolo McFlurry, because I have much love for the Rolos, but it let me down. I just couldn't get excited about it.

I have to try that McFlurry. I've been thinking about it for weeks! I hope the potty training gets much much easier for all of you.

do you bribe? i am a briber. 1 sour patch kid for every you-know-what in the pot. works like a charm :)

Lightning McQueen undies were put in our trash can today. :) Clean them? No, thank you!
This "thing" has hindered my son's potty training for the past year. Losing my mind!

I loved rolos when I was little so I gave in and tried one of those in the "snack size" at Mickey D's a few days ago. It was so good, but I didn't even eat all of it..very rich with the caramel.

When potty training our last, Eliza, every time she had success she was rewarded some M&M's and so wasn't I. And when there was an accident???? I munched some M&M's. Yes, the candies in the brown bag got me thru! (Not sure why I didn't think of it this with the first 2 children!)

Potty training is soooo hard. After my first failed attempt with child #1 I waited to start any potty training until my kids were just a few months away from being 3 :-) We didn't even begin to work on it until then.

I love Rolo's. And I'm prego with baby #3 - so seeing that picture makes me want to send my husband out for one of those McFlurries. And if I sent him for that - I'd have to have some fries to go with it. Hmmm...

Oh Hoooooney....

Blessings,
Kate :)

Ugh, such a painful part of parenting! We're training our 2 year old too, and every time he has an accident I try to remember a friend who has a 21 year disabled son in diapers.

I've had a few children regress from our "progress" way back when we had to do this. It is very much a natural flow of progression, though it doesn't seem so at the time. It's ok to go backwards b/c next time you'll move forward at a much swifter pace. Just stay relaxed so the joy of "growing up" isn't lost.

Hope this is encouraging.

We are potty training as well at my house and I refuse to attempt to wash panties that have been "soiled" (to put it delicately). I actually have figured out that if you take scissors and cut them up both sides, they will then peel back like a diaper and that equals less mess than trying to pull them down and have a huge mess! :)

I'm not sure I'm looking forward to potty training my little one. You are very right, all of God's grace:) I am grateful for your tips and live and learn moments shared Amanda:)

Blessings to you.

The day you Tweeted about the Rolo McFlurry, I went to McDonald's. Because I too have been living in potty training Groundhog Day. "I thought we had this!" Ugh.

Hang in there, friend. She won't go to kindergarten in diapers. Right?

Potty training child #1? HARD. Potty training child #2? Lose-my-mind-cry-a-lot-of-tears-I'm-surprised-she-ever-got-potty-trained- HARD. Potty training child #3? She woke up one morning and said "I wear panties now." And that was it. She was done. And then I cried a lot of tears because my baby was in big girl panties.

Clearly I'm warped. And maybe you should have a third? ;)

I had a pair (her favorite pair) sucked down the toilet as I tried to rinse them out... I can send you some Happy Hippos- that did it for us! :)

I'm usually a lurker, but the potty training reality brought me out of my hiding place! My son is a few days younger than AB and we've been working on PT for, oh, 9 months now? We're taking a very laid-back approach (still in diapers, but he uses the potty maybe 70% of the time). I am petrified with fear of moving to undies... sigh. Anyway, just another mom commiserating with you on the joys (NOT) of PT.

Also, the (true) joys of the Rolo McFlurry? YES PLEASE!! LOVE those things!!

OH AMANDA... YOU ARE SO FUNNY AND HAVE SUCH A LOVELY, TENDER HEART. I HAVE A 23 YR OLD SON WHO IS WAITING TO SEE IF HE MADE IT INTO THE TEXAS GAME WARDEN ACADEMY.I PRAY SO MUCH FOR HIM AND HIS DECISIONS THAT WILL BE AFFECTING HIS LIFE, AND HIS FUTURE WIFE. WHEN HE WAS YOUNG, HE WOULD NOT SLEEP WITH THE LIGHT OFF. I JUST ABOUT HAD A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN THINKING WE WEREN'T DOING SOMETHING RIGHT AS PARENTS BECAUSE OF THE FEAR OF THE DARK. I LOVE LOOKING AT YOUR BLOGS BECAUSE IT MAKES ME LAUGH. DON'T GET ME WRONG PLEASE!!! I KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS, BUT GOD'S GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR THE DAY. YOU WILL LOOK BACK ON THESE DAYS OF POTTY TRAINING AND LAUGH TOO. YOU ALREADY DO WITH JAX. APPRECIATE THESE DAYS! I CAN'T WAIT TO READ ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCES AS YOUR KIDS GROW INTO TEENAGERS...ANATOMY TALKS, GIRLTALKS, BOYTALKS, BROKEN HEART TALKS...CAN'T WAIT KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. THANKS FOR LETTING US ENJOY YOUR KIDS TOO. LOVE YOU MUCH!!

Wow - I grow thru your posts. The thought that undies will be thrown away, b/c we r regressing. How often we try to regree as adults, "its to hard, I messed up." And I'd like to think Jesus would say, 'yeah and you will again, but we're not going backwards.'

Grace/underwear...hmm?

I know nothing of the potty training.
I know a lot about that Rolo McFlurry. I'm currently trying to break my addiction to it.

Been wanting to try the Rolo McFlurry. My only complaint about Mc's flurries is that there is not enough candy in them! :)I never liked getting to the bottom and having only vanilla ice cream!I love blizzards from DQ, and I always pay for extra candy in them. I figure Mcs would do extra candy, too!

Potty training ... "This too shall pass!" (no pun intended!)

Two stories...my youngest daughter was almost 27 months. We had been working on potty training and she knew when she had to go. She just chose not to. We were in WalMart and she saw a Dora kitchen. She told me she wanted Santa to bring that for her. I said, "Oh, honey. I'm sorry. Santa only brings those to big girls who go on the potty all the time." By her own choice, we never had another accident and yes she got the Dora kithcen for Christmas.

The second story which really isn't mine...a good friend of mine was stuggling trying to get her son to go number 2 on the potty. He would insist on having a diaper on to do that business. One day she cut a hole in the diaper right by his little bottom. He had on the diaper and told her he was going to go. She asked if he was sure and he said yes. She said, Well then, you had better sit down on the potty because there is a big hole in the back of your diaper." He felt the hole and sat down. He did his business on the potty. He realized it wasn't anything to be afraid of and that solved that.

Good luck!

Potty training is like the least fun thing to do in the world. I like 3girlsmom's suggestion. My 2nd was actually not too bad to train, and I am hoping my 3rd just wakes up wanting to wear panties one day.

I remember buying "Dora the Explorer" panties for my daughter and telling her if she went potty on Dora then Dora would cry...
It worked but I'm sure she will need theropy as an adult...

My Grayson was born February 2nd so he is within days of AB. We are PT as well. Can I say this? Once they are over the "This is fun" stage...they go directly to the "I don't want to do this anymore" stage. It is automatic! When they realize this actually requires MORE work of them they want no more of it. Hang in there momma because now you are armed with the KNOWLEDGE that she CAN do this...now you must expect her to do it as if it is a discipline issue. SOme moms may cringe at this reality but the quicker you teach her that this is NOT a choice and that there is a consequence to choosing NOT to use the potty...she will follow you. DO NOT go back. DO NOT give in to thinking she is afraid of the potty. Be gentle. Read her a book and talk to her while she goes. PT is NOT instant no matter how easy the child there WILL be accidents. YOU CAN DO THIS MOMMA!

try the Rolo McFlurry with Oreos added in. It's truly amazing! I got it accidentally once and have ordered it that way ever since! Just make sure they put the Rolo syrup AND the Rolo pieces in with the Oreo as well. It's soooo good!

We had to give up after our weekend of "trying." Mommy and Daddy just weren't emotionally ready. Son wasn't ready. He asked for a diaper change please on day 4. You're doing great!

I love it! Frustrated with potty training she turns to rolo McFlurries. Oh how I can relate to you! :)

BTW...I hope that journal is almost all full. I sure miss dropping in and hearing about your day to day life. Even tho we've never met, I do enjoy your way of communicating so much.

Hang in there. Your friend was right...of my 4 boys none have started kgarten in diapers and little AB is still young:) It WILL come.

Blessings,

My head strong daughter was hard to potty train also. A friend told how she id it with her child. In the summer we went out to play in regulat unies and a long shirt withthe potty chair. She knew about the potty. I gave her lots to drink, lots. She did not want to use the potty so it went down her leg. she hated the feeling! After a change of panties and more to drink. It happened again. Changed clothes again then when shw felt the need to go she ran to potty. she learned fast to go in the potty to avoid it running down her leg. I could not believe how easy it was to train her after months of pull ups and other things. It might not work for AB but it might be worth a try. I think pull up do not help w/training cause kids do no feel anything. Good luck!! My daughter was 28 months(we waited for summer) and never had an accident once trained. Even at night. She trained first with BM.

My son had a major fear of going #2. He was potty trained for #1 in a few days- but #2 scared him out of his little mind. He would hold it for days until he was uncomfortable and in pain- and we would put a diaper on him to go. It was ridiculous. After 2 MONTHS of this and an embarrassing incident at a restaurant with our 2 year old crying and loudly proclaiming he had to go poo-poo.... I tried what my mom used with my brother when he went through the same thing... a glycerin suppository. We used it one time- and it worked like a charm. He was on the toilet within 30 seconds going to the bathroom. That was the day he learned to go #2. He got over his fear and never has had an accident. We are getting ready to potty train our daughter, who is about 2 months younger then AB- and I am dreading it.... She is strong willed and has a mind of her own- I fear it's not going to go as well as with our compliant boy! :)

Oh, my! Like I said on twitter, right after I clicked on "publish post" when I wrote about how well my daughters get along, I heard screaming and yes, literally, had to pry them off of each other, and I am talking hair pulling, clawing, cat fight between my two girls! I told them they were making me into a liar!!! Sheesh! I'm thinking posting thing bragging about our kids might be dangerous? Darn that murphy guy anyway!

3 little boys and I still have my hair said...

My middle son has Down's Syndrome. He is 5 and has had a very successful week of potty training this week! Praise the Lord! We've been working with him off an on for over 2 years. To say the least, God has grown a lot of patience in us!! Hang in there!

Secondly, McDonald's owes you a referral fee on the Rolo McFlurry...it was delicious!

I have a friend who speaks of the "hundred dollar method." Put her in a one-piece dress with no bottoms for about a week. Stay home the whole time. Reward, reward, reward for successful potties. Pay $100 and have your carpet steam cleaned when you're through. :)

After three poop accidents, I came to the same conclusion.

I don't have time to see if anyone suggested this yet, but have you tried emailing the author of the ebook?

I had two very bad experiences potty training, then did the 3 day method on my last and it worked! But it took longer than 3 days (a week or two) and I did email the author when I had a question. She wrote me back immediately with some great advice and a lot of encouragement.

That being said, my middle child (all 3 are boys, now 10, 8, & 6) was a NIGHTMARE to potty train. I thought he was just really headstrong but last year, was diagnosed with Aspergers, which is a mild form of Autism. In retrospect, more grace on my part would have gone a long way. But I was pregnant and dealing with a 4 year old so I'm not too hard on myself. And now, with my youngest starting Kinder this year, those days are nothing but a vague memory.

The best advice I ever read on raising a child with Aspergers - which I think applies to any child - came from Chuck Colson's daughter, who wrote "Raising Max". When she reached her breaking point, she began living as if each day was her last here on earth. Really helps you stop and get some perspective at times when you need it the most! Good luck!

Amanda, I bought the ebook and we're on day 6 with my son. He did great for 3 days, but now he's regressing in every way. He will be three next month. I am six months pregnant, exhausted, an emotional basket case (I actually CANNOT stop crying this morning) and I'm just wondering if I should go buy some diapers. What did you do when AB regressed? Did you stay the course with the diaperless or put her in diapers again? Benjamin has at least three accidents a day but he always sleeps all through the night and wakes up dry. I was comforted by your previous post in which you said potty training Jackson was the most humbling experience of your adult life. I feel so inept.
