The Grammy's

-Thumbs up for being able to easily discern every pair of false eyelashes and enlighten my husband to the common use of hair extensions among celebrities.

-Thumbs down to the brain cells I lost while watching and loving the red carpet show.

-Thumbs up to the stomp dancers they used for "Before He Cheats."

-Thumbs down to Rhianna's ostrich dress. She's so pretty though.

-Thumbs up to beautiful Beyonce' for being brave enough to wear that outfit that was non-thigh-flattering. There's not enough money in the world to get me to wear something like that in front of millions of people. She owns her curves. Beyonce', I heart you. I will remember you this summer when I have to wear a bathing suit.

-Thumbs down to the freakish Beatles show.

-Thumbs up to Kanye West's light-up sunglasses. Will I be able to find those at Target this season?

-Thumbs down to the fact that I could barely hear or understand one word Feist sang. Thumbs up to Curt for telling me what the song says. Not teen angel, but teenage hopes. Oh. Awesome.

-Thumbs up to Alicia Keys and John Mayer's performance.

-Thumbs down to that random contest from outside the Staples Center.

-Thumbs up to Vince Gill's little jab at Kanye because it was stinking funny. Thumbs up for getting to see Amy Grant's pretty face for 2.5 seconds.

-Thumbs down to how strange it was to see the mini-audience in front of the stage clapping, jumping around, and singing along and then see the rest of the audience sitting still and stoic during performances. Hey, were y'all trying to trick us?

-Thumbs up for getting to see Israel Houghton perform.

-Thumbs down for Fergie's second dress. Ooooh, no. Shoulda stuck to her Calvin Klein number.

-Thumbs up to Amy Winehouse's acceptance speech in which she said, "For my Blake, my Blake incarcerated." Why did that get me so tickled? I'm a horrible person. I think it was the accent, which reminded me a lot of what people sounded like where we lived in England. It was so thick we could never copy it.

-Thumbs down to the fact that the most celebrated song was about someone who probably really needs to be in rehab, refusing to go to rehab.

-Thumbs up to Curtis for listening to my "This is the extent of man's glory" speech for the 20th time. I give it any time I watch the world's "best of the best" put on a show. (The Oscar's, the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics, Super Bowl halftime, etc.). Just go outside and look at the sunset, the stars, or the lightening in the sky. The little bit of God's glory that we can see with our eyes makes man's feeble attempts at "glory" look laughable. As Louie Giglio taught one year at Passion, I'm so thankful we can let the little matchstick flames of our lives be swallowed up in the greatness of God's all consuming, blazing fire. How much greater that is than trying to shine on our own and always being replaceable by next year's crop of younger, prettier, more talented, more marketable performers.

The "Blake, Blake incarcerated" comment really tickled my funny bone too!

Thumbs up to Amanda who informs me of the coolness (and lack thereof) of the Grammy's since I too often am living in the library :)

Oh, oh, oh, *what* an important final paragraph...from a girl who too easily gets fascinated with the ideas of man's glory...reality, True Real Life...eternal Life...may I keep my eyes fixed on True Worth. Thanks for the well-written reminder! :)

The husband and I rewound "For my Blake, my Blake incarcerated" over and over and giggled and giggled. Dark humor simpatico.

Amy Winehouse DID just go to rehab. Amy needs Jesus bad.

You TOTALLY crack me up. My nanny and I were just talking about something similar the other day. Why is it that we (man) are so interested in "celebs" that we watch award shows...award shows...for doing something like ACT!?!?! Where are the award shows for God's amazing servants that step out and follow Him faithfully? And how come we're not glued to our TVs to see them?

What about Herbie Hancock and "Rockit?" Do you remember that or was it before your time?

Did you see Amy Grant on Life Today? I think she is beautiful!
Praying for the things and stuff of this week,
holly

You make your husband listen your soapbox speeches, too? = )

Holly said...

OH, and I would love to hear your speech on God's glory (Siesta Fiesta perhaps?) Indeed that was the point and I missed it at first. Shame on me. But I agree...with every single word of your speech. Yes, I do!

Deidre said...

Ooooo...I would sit through that 'glory speech'! Love. It.

Well, I got the recap pictures from People and the recap of the night from you.....so, I feel all caught up and so what if I didn't see the show....I got it all here!

Thanks! Stay well this week.

I wonder if Target will have the Kanye lightup sunglasses - my boys would think I was the coolest mom if I had some of those - hehe

Thumbs down to me for missing it.
Thumbs up to me for not really caring.

Your recap was great! Big thumbs up to you!

Job well done! You need your own show or at least a cameo on TVGuide. No, really, you do. This is the best recap I've read so far.

Love you. Love the way you put that esp. the glory speech. I didn't see them but was beholding the glory of the mountains which never cease to overwhelm me...maybe you should give me the glory speech again whenever i say i have nothing to wear. :)

i was going to say "i agree with..." but then i realized it was all of it...

Thumbs up to Amanda...whom I've never met, but I'm convinced we're girlfriends.

I too, said, "you go girl!" to Beyonce' for owning her thighs. I could use a pinch of her confidence.

Would love to have you over for the Oscars so we could share the red carpet. I would be a good hostess and serve all the important foods...chips & salsa, warm brownies, milkshakes, etc.

Have a fun wedding week. I don't have a sister, so I envy (in a good way :) your sisterhood.

I don't watch many awards shows and I don't listen to very much "pop music". My old ears are almost always on praise music, but I don't disapprove or dislike some secular music. But I will say, I think it is a very sad day for the world when "the best of the best" is in need of rehab. Just think what a powerful testimony Amy Winehouse could have if the Holy Spirit gets hold of her. I am praying toward that end.

Sadly, I missed the Grammys. However, I got Entertainment Tonight last night and got to see "Blake. Blake Incarcerated" and it brought me great joy.

Anonymous said...

i wholeheartedly agree with your review...but you forgot Brad Paisley and his tick song. Not sure if that's a thumbs up or thumbs down :) maybe it's both.

Jenny said...

Ohhh Amanda-

When she said "My Blake incarcerated" diet coke flew out of my nose.

SO FUNNY

And you must not forget Kanye's battery powered dinner jacket! :)

Happy wedding week to you!

I am so upset that I did not watch. I was at a wedding and forgot to dvr! I would have loved to have seen Beyonce and Tina Turner!

You cracked me up with this one.

I saw Alicia Keys and loved her and then watched Vince and Amy but that was it..

AMEN to your "this is the extent of man's glory" rant. I think that every time I watch one of those shows.

Ha! That was great!! I would have seen it if I hadn't gone to sleep at 7:30!!! What in the world?!?! It's not that I'm not cool (ok, I'm really not) but that I've been sick! Likely story!

Amen on the "glory" speech! I have to admit, I didn't watch the grammys but I have seen about a million recaps of the "blake incarcerated" speech...it cracked me up too!

Great reviews! I agree with you that it is sad to see that this is "the extent of man's glory". I have watched stuff like this before and thought about that too. I would love to hear more of your thoughts on it!

Have a great week and weekend!

Great post! I missed them because I don't know who anybody is anymore, but I love Alicia Keys, so I wish I'd seen her performance. I know you are so excited about this weekend. How fun! Have a great time, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY Jackson! (in case you don't post again before then. :) ) It has been so cool watching him grow up. I was at my Stepping Up Bible study and your mom had a picture of Jackson when he was 6 months old and I thought, WOW! He looks so little there! But look at those eyes! Truly a darling!

Great post and recap. I thought it was one of the best shows of Grammy's. Loved Bebe and Aretha! And I was most thankful my daughter, Lauren, was there to interpret and update me on the lack of knowledge I have for most of it. Like the thumbs up, thumbs down. You should have heard our critiques of the outfits. And Amy Winehouse--we laughed too about the comment she made--but felt really bad for her as she looked like they just let her out for a couple of hours on good behavior. Overall, filled the void for the lack of Oscars. Have fun this weekend and take it all in your little big man and your precious sister. love to you, Annette

I'm still laughing as I type, because I'm remembering the "Blake incarcerated" part of Amy Winehouse's speech. I'm so happy I wasn't the only one that got tickled over that line.

I blogged about Kanye West's tribute to his mama. It made me cry!

But my absolute favorite part was the duet between Josh Grobin and Andrea Bocelli! Surely that's what the angels will sound like in heaven!

But, thanks for the ever so wonderful re-cap!

well, said. but i can't believe you left off kanye's sweet tribute to his mama. it sent the tears a streamin'.
i love your other commentary.

I absolutly love your blog. I too am a stay-at-home mom with one little toddler boy. Balancing motherhood and home while seeking to know and please Jesus is difficult; so it's neat to see how you do it.

My sentiments exactly! My family just *loves* it when I give them that speech at professional sporting events. :) I enjoy the game, but at some point I look around and feel saddened by the money, time, and energy we spend to "worship" mere humans, and be entertained by man's fleeting glory when there's so much hurt in the world and so many who need Jesus. I feel conviction every time, even though I don't go that often. Kudos to Curt for listening to you!

I came over today to catch up on your blog while biding my time with the icky stomach stuff. I've been a "stranger" for awhile, and at the risk of making a long comment even longer, would like to introduce myself. I've "watched" you and your sister grow up -- though that's not nearly as weird as it sounds :) -- through participating in your mom's studies these 10+ years. She has been a tremendous and consistent grounding force in my life and helped me stay close to Jesus through some fiery trials of my own. I shudder to think where I might be if not for her ministry and influence. God knew just when to place her in my life! More recently I've had the blessing of attending all the Life Today tapings thus far and talked with you very briefly at one of the earlier ones. (I don't expect you to remember.) After 10 years of life-changing Bible study and now the tapings and Wednesday shows, y'all are an important part of my life.

I found your blog "accidentally" through a link on another blog and was intrigued by the name Baby Bangs. How fun to find it was yours! My precious boy is 10, but I love reminiscing about those younger years as I read your sweet posts. They pass much too quickly! I catch up on both blogs periodically and am always captivated by your wit and transparency. Thanks, Amanda, for allowing us "strangers" to read this one. I'm sure it's weird that so many of us feel like we "know" you when you have no idea who we are! You are loved much and prayed for much.
Today, I stopped by to see what you had to say about the wedding. Congrats to Melissa! I hope today has been a day to treasure for all of you! Praying for y'all today and looking forward to the follow-up posts! :)

Lisa in Ft.W.
