Meme, Meme, We Love a Good Meme

Tammie tagged me for a 7 things meme, but I've been seeing another one that I haven't ever done before and wanted steal it! So thanks, Tammie and Erin! (By the way, Tammie is a friend from H-town and Erin is one of the wonderful cousins I acquired when I married Curtis!)

What I was doing 10 years ago - Spring of 1998
1. Getting ready for senior prom and high school graduation.
2. Spending a lot of time with my Nanny because she was dying from breast cancer.
3. Figuring out who would be my roommate at A&M - Sarah Todd!
4. Going to lots of high school baseball games.
5. Getting my nails done with my best friend Jennifer every other week. Hmmm, what's that like, former self?

Five things on my to-do list today (we'll go with tomorrow since its nighttime)
1. Pick out furniture to fill this half-empty house.
2. Meet the Altics for breakfast at IHOP.
3. Wash, dry, and straighten my hair (it takes so long).
4. Hang everything that's supposed to be on Jackson's walls.
5. Recycle some of our moving boxes and packing paper, thanks to the influence of our new neighbors who are inspiring me to be more green!

Five snacks I enjoy
1. Fresh, regular-fat Cheez-Its.
2. Sour cream and onion Pringles.
3. Gerber fruit snacks for toddlers. (It is your responsibility to know what your child is eating, right?)
4. Cherries when they're in season.
5. Sunni's 7-layer dip.

Five things I would do if I were a billionaire
1. Tithe big.
2. Support missionaries.
3. Help ourselves, our families, and our friends pay off debt. And buy our moms and sisters their dream houses.
4. Give to organizations that are translating the Bible into all kinds of languages.
5. Buy a horse ranch - preferably one by a river - in the Texas Hill Country. Own lots of Arabian horses and watch them run through the pasture while I wash dishes at my kitchen sink. Amen. Think about when I'll ride a white one behind Jesus one day.

Five of my bad habits
1. Staying up too late.
2. Wasting time on the computer!
3. Waiting too long between highlight appointments.
4. Waiting too long to get Jackson's hair cut.
5. Not returning calls unless I'm driving in the car. That is because I'm either alone or I have Jackson strapped in his car seat and unable to do crazy things while I'm talking.

Five places I have lived
1. Houston, TX
2. Victoria, TX
3. College Station, TX
4. Thornaby-on-Tees, UK
5. Irving, TX (affectionately known to Irvingites as The Crooked I)

Five jobs I’ve had
1. Production assistant for the To Live is Christ video series. I earned my wage by crawling like a crab through the sand dunes in Galveston - holding cue cards! I think that was the only time my mom ever used cue cards.

2. Customer File Maintenance person for my dad's plumbing company. At age 16, Jennifer and I worked there during the summer and made $7 an hour. We were the envy of all our friends. We rolled in about 9, got taken to lunch by one of our dads, and left by 3 to catch the rest of the sun's good tanning rays. On our days off we ordered pizza, watched Days, and swam in her pool. Life was good.

3. I did some random stuff for Steve Seelig in college when he was officing at LPM. One time I got to stuff publicity packets for Watermark! My fave!

4. Missions intern at HFBC (where I met Curtis Wayne).

5. LPM - my first full time job.

*Adding number 6. Breastfeeding my child for the first year of his life. The hardest job I've ever done! But worth it when I think about how many hours I spent holding that little baby who has hardly sat still in my lap since. Thank You for that victory, Lord. You know You won it for me.

those are my 5 bad habits!
(although i have lots more to add...)

and i felt better when i read you have to plan to wash your hair and dry/flat iron it.
that is always a project for me too...my hair takes FOREVER.
i'm always amazed at people who can wash their hair and go...

  2. I love it! From the breast-feeding victory (which I lost by the way...to my chagrin, I only made it six months with each of them) to the talking on the phone in the car because Jackson is strapped in to watching Days in the summer with your friend to all the things you'd buy, especially the horse ranch, I think this was quite fun!

PS I have a hard time going to bed early, too! It is my downfall on many days.

  3. Cheez-Its. Hallelujah.

It's a good thing I didn't know you when you were stuffing publicity packets for Watermark.

Because I might have driven you a little bit insane.

  4. My 2-year-old's over the Gerber fruit snacks, but I sure miss them! Glad to hear I'm not the only one who liked them. :0)

God never fails to use the blog Amanda! I was in deep (and I mean deep) despair with my breastfeeding troubles...husband and I have been praying and praying...just not making enough milk. Just had another unsuccesful attempt and took a break...read the blog. You gave me hope! Thank you. And thanks for giving Jesus all the praise...such a comfort. HE will help me do this. Please God.

  6. I loved reading your answers! I still have a few moving boxes in my garage. I worked hard unpacking but it took me weeks to hang the pictures and decorate the way I like.
We have a friend who just had a baby and she had to quit breastfeeding and she is carrying a lot of guilt for this. Please pray for her. This is the sweetest couple and so humble and God is moving them to my area!!

Have fun this weekend and enjoy IHOP....love their pancakes!

    My 10 years ago:
    1. Blending a family and learning to be a step mom to 2 new daughters.
    2. Having to change jobs because of hubby's layoff: from kindergarten teacher to inside sales for the semi-conductor industry. How sad that a job like that pays 3 times the salary of teaching children to read, write and have a future.
    3. Buying a house the month before the layoff. We are still in it because God is faithful.
    4. Turning 40 and thinking it was a big deal. (Obviously, THIS birthday 10 years later is the Big Deal.)
    5. Having a health scare that was taken care of so that I'm writing this 10 years later. Girls: don't miss those yearly checkups with your gyns!

    10 years later:
    1. All the kids are grown and gone. Presently 2 in college, one out of college and married and 1 in graduate school.
    2. Back teaching (first graders now!) Still doesn't pay much but fills my heart and soul.
    3. 10 more years added to lifelong friendships. Now we are helping with each other's daughter's weddings. What a blessing.
    4. 10 more years of marriage that have brought a 5+ year battle with cancer for my husband. (MEN: don't miss your yearly checkups, either!)
    5. 10 more years of grace and mercy from a loving God who is entirely faithful even when we are faithless.

I lift up my eyes continually to the mountain. How do people live this life without God? We must continue to tell them the Good News; the God News: there is abundant life available regardless of your circumstances or past through Jesus.

You, my dear one, are an absolute hoot!!! I love your letting us in on your life as a young wife and mother. I am so blessed to be able to look back quite a number of years and remember what it is like. Keep on bloggin', sweet one.

  9. Spring of '98 I was also getting ready for Prom and Graduation. Yeah. And I had a huge laugh over that #5 - been there too. It's funny, just last week I was wondering what it would be like getting nails on again, and then had to scoff at the absurdity of it all.

Not to mention they make typing nearly impossible.

Glad you're getting settled in! It is fun arranging and putting up stuff in a new house. That was a fun meme (we still eat Gerber fruit snacks BTW and 7-layer dip yum!).

  11. Uh-uh, I get that "former self" thing! Funny how there's just not time for some of that stuff after kids! And how it doesn't seem as important...

  12. You love Watermark, too?!?!?! OMG. I feel like I'm reverting back to middle school right now, b/c that's when I fell in love with them.

My favorite WM song (right now at least) is "Holy Cry" or whatever it's called. I skip to the end of the song 'cause I love the part about "We return to You O God, You are a Holy God..."

And then I sing it in my card & pretend I'm Christy Nockels.

    'tis true.

  13. Love your lists. I agree with the breatfeeding, definately worthy of of being mentioned and may need it's very own slot- "Five of the Most Difficult Things About Breastfeeding" & "Five of the Best Things About Breastfeeding".

  14. I do love me some Tammie! Even though I've only met her once, I think she is just the most gentle person I've ever met!

This is a fun Meme, too! I might just do it myself, we shall see!

And as for my to-do list today, after finally living back in my old room for almost 4 months now, I finally have a free moment to CLEAN all day long and also hang things up where they need to be! Praise the Lord...the mess/unorganization is killing me!

  15. Amen to the hardest job, I breastfed all 4 of mine for 1 year. Oh wait, I think I'll change that. Raising teens is much harder. But I still love it!

    Blessings-

    Hi Amanda,
We've never met, but I've always been sure we would be famous friends. That was confirmed today when I read your five bad habits. We share the same bad habits. :) Thanks for your entertaining, honest, and uplifting blog!

  17. Amen to the 6th job. If we'd had time cards, I wonder how much our paychecks would have been. Probably substantial!

  18. Great list. By the way, I linked to you on my family site www.allthatnaz.blogspot.com
I hope that is OK. I started a new meme called Friday's fabulous finds where I list 2-3 blogs that I love.

Blessings to you, Angela (You probably are most familiar with me as Becoming Me)

  19. I well-remember your Cheez-It love when you were on rec staff. How come that wasn't listed as a job??

  20. Hey Amanda,

I have a quick question for you, but don't want to post it here. Any chance you could send me a quick email and I'll respond?

    Thanks!

  22. Can I take your summer at age 16 - bottle it and have it for my own this summer? That sounds like my idea of heaven! :-)

  23. I too leave at least a two inch gap between highlights and my scalp before I re-do. However, it's this nursing job you speak of that can put a delay on the beautification of my hair. We're working on month four. About the same time between hair appointments! HA!

  24. I'll always remember that precious moment on the Get Out of That Pit Live Simulcast when your mom talked about you holding Jackson in your rocking chair talking to him realizing what Jackson had meant to you that first year. It was such a precious moment that stuck with me! Hope your new "red door" is full of faith and passion, His power and His presence. Sounds like a humble blessed start.

I've recently (the past two months) been bitten with the blogbug... and yours is one that I read regularly and love it... I would amen resoundly to the nursing... I am on week three (which is a record for me...) and between mastitis (the spelling could be totally screwed up on that one) and thrush it's taking some gumpsion to keep at it. (Sophia was a St. Patty's day and joins Madeline, 7, and Charlie, 4).

  28. This is a fun little meme. I might steal it too=) can I visit your horse ranch! Sounds awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Those are my bad habits, too!!

When are you posting the house pictures you mentioned? After the furniture, I'm guessing. Hope IHOP was yum- isn't breakfast food THE BEST?!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love that meme
I also did it last week on my blog as well and I should have added breastfeeding too. It about killed me - I got mastitis 7 times!!
Oh and talking on the phone while in the car is the only time I get some quiet out of my boys. My hubby had to up my cell phone minutes b/c I kept going over them - LOL!
    Have a great day!
