Some observations during and after my run this morning:
Beckham would literally collapse and die if I took him running this time of year. Bless his heart. We need to get his hair cut.
My side stitch is finally under control.
Mockingbirds are a bit cranky. I saw a squirrel get dive-bombed by one.
It's much less humid at 8 a.m. than 7 a.m.
The running shorts and shirts I bought that are supposed to keep you dryer really do work!
I've always thought the people in coordinated, fashionable workout clothes are less athletic than the people who wear shorts and random t-shirts. Athletes really don't give a rip. If you were/are an athlete, do you share my feelings? Perhaps this is how I deal with my insecurity when I see the other ladies looking cute in their outfits.
If I haven't touched a volleyball in two years can I still be an athlete?
All the high school runners are out and about on the trails now. And none of them wear shirts. Apparently they don't care that all the dirty old men and cougars are lusting after them like popsicles. Put on a shirt, people!

The last bit made me laugh! Good for you out running in the am, especially in Houston;)
Where did you by your work out clothes? I am on the look out for some new ones.
I bought a cute coordinated outfit, because I have gotten into cycling, and I wanted to look the part. Sometimes I just wear my outfit around the house and it feels like I'm doing something athletic, even if I'm just washing the dishes.
(p.s.-Hi Amanda, this is Meghann. I don't know if you remember me, but I grew up at HFBC, and have pictures of my 10th birthday party with you in them.) :)
How did you get your side stitch under control?
Oh my goodness I agree about the running outfits of some women. I work at a university and the girls run by our office all day long. My friend and I have decided that now a' days everyone is running in their underware. And they don't seem to care. I might just die if someone made me wear the outfit!!
I found out the hard way that buying all those cute athletic outfits doesn't make one a runner. Been there and done that, now have the t-shirt.
Love your post Amanda!
I agree about the outfits!!! Athletes just don't give a rip!! All I care about is that my clothes don't get in the way or slow me down while running. About the high school girls: They really don't get it. I didn't at that age, I just felt cute. They probably do too. They probably like whatever attention they get, too.
You mentioning mockingbirds....reminds me....when my sister Kelly Jo and I were little, we always managed to find a baby mockingbird who had fallen out of the nest before mastery of flight. This would happen with at least one mockingbird every single summer. And we named every last one of them "Moccasin."
Also, I like your theory on the workout gear...as it might mean that my atrocious gym get-ups may actually lead others to believe I am somewhat athletic. Then again, I think that me near-falling off the elliptical machine probably signaled otherwise.
LOL
I've been out of the blogging world for awhile. This was such a fun one to start off with on my return!
When my husband and I were running the other day, we came across another runner who informed us that there was a blackbird that was diving at his head the way we were headed and to watch out. Afterwards, we weren't sure if he was telling the truth or playing some kind of prank on us as we were "on alert" for the bird. Matt (my husband) joked that the guy was probably having a hay day watching us. Who knows. We did see a bird flying around, but it never swooped at us. But I'm giggling just thinking about it if it was a joke.
Hmmm, I used to think the same thing about cutely dressed runners, but I think I've changed my tune a bit. I actually read the blog of a serious, serious runner who actually made fun of all the amateurs that run in cotton. And I will admit, since I bought some stuff myself, it's been much nicer! Yes, dryer and more comfortable, totally worth it to me! Are you a long distance runner? I've just picked up to 10K distances the last couple months. My ultimate running goal is a half marathon.
Even if I was a young, hot high schooler, I'd be too afraid of the perves to run half naked!
Sorry for the mega long comment!
i kind of feel the same way about coordinated outfits! i don't think about what i wear when i run--other than making sure i'm appropriately clothed. ha!
Well, I like to think of myself as a real athlete and I do not run in put together outfits and all matching. I usually wear a wife beater or a tank as I like to call them, shorts, socks and shoes. I am not trying to make a fashion statement while running!! You had me laughing on that last paragraph, yes, put on some clothes peeps!!!
p.s. I want to clarify, that when I said I got work out apparal that that meant actual clothes, not just undergarments. And I don't dress to match, but for comfort the dri-fit material is SO nice!
Funny, I thought the same thing about work out clothes- I usually look grubby in whatever I could find to run in. (before the herniated disk)
I loved this post! I always think the most random things when I run, too. I come home full of "deep thoughts" for the hubs!
I'm just the opposite about cute workout clothes, though. I've always believed folks who spend that money to exercise know what they're doing!
Yes, put on a shirt!!!! Glad your side stitch is under control and that the purchase of new clothes didn't deter you from running. :)
I am a long distance runner and run in a sports bra and running shorts or some sort of compression leggings...and recently in running skirts, whoot whoot! Cotton shirts (atleast in the summer time) are a good way to over heat and get sick! I live in Alabama and maybe it would be different elsewhere, but its just too stinkin hot and dangerous to not wear clothes for the heat(aka...NOT cotton)! There are shirts that are made for heat too, I just don't prefer them.
Anyhoo....so glad your running!! I've run for most all my life, I think, and it is the best therapy anyone could ever want!! I thank God everyday for legs that can run...they are a gift and I never take my running for granted! It is where I hear God the most!!
Have a good day and keep lacing those shoes!!
I always write posts when I run, too. And by the way, I live right next to a university. So the track team of young college boys runs right by my house. Shirtless. Every day.
I totally don't notice or stumble. Ahem.
It is not even fair that men can go shirtless without feeling threatened but women or for me anyways, I feel like I will get sexually harassed or assaulted. LOL, not that I look incredible shirtless (LOL) but sometimes I think having boobs is all it takes for men to get all riled up! No fair, it's hot!
Ha I know. This Texas heat is unbearable. I agree, true athletes don't wear cute outfits, they put on what is clean and not sweaty from yesterday. :) Props to you for running in the humidity! I've stopped for a bit and am doing the whole indoor thing! Blech.
I'm a runner and I have been for years. I started out with the grubby t-shirts and shorts, but thought why would I choose to look grubby when I could be wearing the cute outfits - and they last so long if you don't dry them in the dryer. I choose not to wear a shirt - it's just too hot and humid in Florida. And if someone wants to judge if I'm athletic or not - well, I let my legs speak for themselves :-) hee hee.
You are cracking me up. I write posts while trying to fall asleep. I definitely think real athletes just put on whatever, they are not trying to dress to impress...way to go!
You will always be an athlete as long as you don't give a rip! If you start getting cutsie we'll start to worry! My daughter teases me when I match! I wonder why it's less humid at 8:00 than 7:00? We used to shave our Golden Retriever and at first my husband (who is a Vet) freaked out. He got over it quickly when he noticed how much easier it was to keep the house clean! :)
I love to run while listening to your mom give one of her amazing messages!
Love, Angie in Michigan xoxo
About the running, you're right, the "athletes" don't really care what they wear because they're not running to look good while they run! ;)
And yes, in high school while running I didn't wear a shirt either, but usually only when we were running "trails" which around here means out in the woods where there aren't any other people! And I probably didn't look all that cute either, but it was either that or be so hot you couldn't run!
I'm an avid runner. . I've several marathons under my belt and I really love competing in 5Ks (with age group awards and always strive to be the 1st woman to cross the finish line). With all that said, I'm about as prissy as they come. . . So, in my opinion. . . girl, it is ALL about the outfit!!!! I have to tell you too, it is hot/humid here in GA too. I almost would rather run at 5:00 AM and beat the heat/humidity.
So proud of you for running!!
Yes please...PUT ON SHIRTS!! Especially the teens running in sports bras!! Okay, sorry, my 2 cents. Felt the need to chime in. :D
You crack me up girl!
