The Weekend Thus Far

I am a super cool 30-year-old sitting on the couch on a Saturday night with nothing better to do than type on a blog. Jealous? It gets better. I don't actually have anything to say! So let's just go with a weekend recap even though the weekend is still in progress.

Friday:
Jackson's preschool closes for the summer. For the last two years I filled in the gap by getting him in the MDO program at our own church. However, with a 30 minute drive (and one leg of it during rush hour), it was barely worth it. I'd decided I wasn't even going to try it this year. But one day I was driving around and saw a sign for a summer day camp program by my house. I was thrilled and got him signed up right away. He will love it! I'm thankful God opened up this door for my active little guy. The school had an open house on Friday night, so we went to meet Jackson's teachers and see which room he'll be in. He acted like he didn't want to be there, but then he pouted when we left. This is typical for him right now. One day when I think back on age four, one word will come to mind. ATTITUDE. Help me, Lord!

For dinner we headed to a local Mexican food restaurant that is incredibly good and incredibly crowded on weekends. I didn't have it in me to sup in the presence of the entire community, so I threw out IHOP as a suggestion. It was a go. We rolled up to that fine dining establishment, making quite an entrance when Curtis hopped the curb in full view of all the customers seated by the windows. I was almost too embarrassed to go in, but then I realized there was hardly anyone inside. Nothing makes me happier as a mom than eating with my kids in a nearly empty restaurant. Seriously. The only other people who joined us were several sets of grandparents and their small grandchildren. As it turned out, both of our kids ate free and there was a diet menu. I got some healthier pancakes and eggs and they were fine.

Afterward, I suckered Curtis into a family trip to the grocery store, which I ended up regretting due to my son's behavior.

Saturday:
I slept in! Honestly, I have no idea how long Annabeth was crying over the monitor before I actually woke up at 8:45. Oops. I fixed breakfast for the kids, then headed to La Madeleine to meet my mom and Amy, who is like my big sis. There was still a crease from my pillow on my cheek when I walked out the door. Pure awesomeness. Before heading home I took advantage of my solitude and went to Academy. Academy is one of my favorite places in the entire world. I love it so much. I bought at couple of running outfits, which means that I will take an unintentional running break and pick it back up in a couple of months. That's what happens any time I buy something workout related.

A few hours later, my little family met up with my mom and we went to the graduation party of a very wonderful high school senior, Sara Mattingly. One day I will write a whole post on how much we love this girl and her family. She is going to DBU next fall (which is partly our fault) and we are going to miss her like crazy!

Today we had a heat index of like 106 and I'm not even kidding you. My eyes were fixed on the neighborhood pool and if swimming did not occur, I was going to chalk this whole weekend up to a loss. The four of us went and had a great time. I love, love, love the water. Jackson finally mastered the slide. Parents can't linger at the bottom and catch their kids, so we've had to wait until he could swim past the ropes to us or swim to the wall by himself after coming off the slide. That happened today and it was quite exciting. He did it over and over until he wore himself out.

We had a good evening just hanging out at home. Annabeth went to bed at 6:15 because she missed her afternoon nap and I felt justified. Jackson watched some Gaither music on TV with us. His back was to me, but at one point during Great is Thy Faithfulness I noticed his left arm raised in the air. I was so moved by my spiritually sensitive child. Then he stood up and I saw a banana in his right hand, his cheeks bulging, and his mouth unable to close because of everything stuffed in it. No wonder Curtis, who had a full view of him the entire time, wasn't as moved by our son's demonstration of worship.

Curtis and I capped off the night by watching a Tom Brokaw documentary on the year 1968, during which I painted my nails red. It was an exciting night, I tell ya.

Tomorrow we'll worship in a banana-free environment and enjoy lunch with my dad's side of the family. My aunt and uncle and their kids just moved home from Japan and it will be our first time to see them in many months. Exciting times! Have a great Sunday!

I loved this! I loved the comment about Jackson worshipping - I remember when i took my niece to a women's worship (she's 11) and at one point I was sitting and I looked up and she was standing next to me with her little tween arms in the age. I just loved it!

Have a great week!

Speaking of your weekend, I dreamed the other night that you have been pregnant for the last nine months and never mentioned it on your blog, only to post pictures of your brand-new baby boy this weekend. When I woke up, I couldn't decide if it was real or only a dream. Crazy! That would seriously spice up your weekend, though!

THAT is real life! It doesn't have to be glamorous, but you did it with the people you loved, and had a good time!

Jumping the curb sounds fun. Now when I get bored, or find myself in the middle of an uneventful weekend, I make a Pioneer Woman Recipe- the caramelized onion and prosciutto pizza is WONDERFUL- and it's only 4 points per square. (We're doing WW too- Coach has lost 50 pounds since February 1!)

Your weekend sounds perfect!! I can't believe it's that hot in Houston. We're enjoying So. Calif with our daughter & her fam. Last week with Kennedy in C. Springs was awesome! Her reflux problem seems to be much better and she's gaining weight~we're all excited.

Congrats to Jackson for his triumph on the slide! I can't believe he can swim across the pool..that's awesome.

Have a wonderful Sunday with your Dad's family! We're off to Ventura Beach for the day--more sun! If the June glume will burn off!!

I am laughing so hard at the "banana-free worship" comment!!! :) I love Academy, too, and am looking forward to using a gift card there soon!

I hope you have a great Sunday, too! I am at home with my sick baby girl. My husband went to church and has a meeting to attend. I really dislike missing church, but having my girl nap in her crib while she doesn't feel well is important!

Have a great rest of your weekend! :)

Well, I for one LOVE IHOP. I must enjoy our restaurant outings now as when my 9 month old gets a little older we won't go out to eat for 2 years. It happened with our first!

Oh, and I'm 30, too and I flipped by that documentary last night while my hubby and I were chilling on the couch. I never would've thought I'd prefer being at home on a Saturday night, but I do! :)

If it makes you feel any better, I'm 34 and still only about 75% as cool as you. I'm hoping to peak around 36 or 38.

I love that you love the water. I have so many friends who avoid the beach and pool due to body issues. I'm sensitive to that, but I feel so bad that they (and their kids) miss water play. So it makes my heart smile when I meet other mothers of young ones who aren't ashamed of their inner water baby.

(And if it makes you feel better, I watched that Brokaw documentary last night too, while I was nursing a newborn.)

I love this kind of blogging....just life. It makes everyone feel normal to relate on an everyday level. More of life is just the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday-ness of it all. Have a wonderful next week!

I too love when I walk into a mostly empty place to eat...I can't believe that Jackson is 4...how can he be four already???

Blessings as you spend time with your family...

My weekend was equally unexciting!

I just moved to our convent in Tucson AZ. The temps are almost to 110! But its a dry heat they say (it doesn't make it less hot I say!).

Anyway... today was a lovely day of worship and fellowship.

Great is our God! Blessings! Sister Lynn

Our boys ask to go to 59 Diner!

I too always regret family trips to the grocery store. So much that I can't even remember the last time it occurred!

It sounds like a perfect family weekend.

Academy is probably our family's favorite store. Mine would be Target of course, but the boys at my house outnumber me. Jared says if you can't find it at Academy you don't really need it.

Your weekend recaps are always great fun to read:) Descriptive and interesting they are:) I understand with the alarm going off, I get up early every am to feed my girl. Six-thirty am comes early, really early:)

Thank you so much for sharing your life with us, Amanda! Your authenticity and openess are such an encouragement!

As a side note, I'm in a circle of friends of whom many that I love and respect are homeschooling because of their strong faith. I have not been lead to homeschool and feel somewhat isolated, even judged at times. It's good to have a voice I can relate to that loves the Lord and is not convicted to homeschool (for now anyway).

Much love!
