Ever Since the Baby Was Born

I'm sitting cross-legged on my couch, obviously with my laptop, and there is a little pink bundle laying next to me. She has been asleep for most of the evening but she's showing signs of trying to wake up. When she gets hungry she starts pumping and flailing her little arms everywhere. Like a cheerleader. I'm not sure how I feel about that, but it's cute.

I've been making a mental list of things that are different now that I'm no longer pregnant and consequently have a newborn.

Number one. Thank You God, I do not have to visit the ladies room every 20 minutes.

Number two. My lactose issues have returned to me in full force. Holy dairy cow.

Number three. When I crawl in bed at night, I am usually shivering because it's so cold in our room. But every time I wake up to feed Annabeth or roll on my stomach just because I can, I find myself in a pool of sweat. It is so gross.

Number four. My second day hair is no longer presentable because of number three. Trust me, it's funktified.

Number five. I'm dying to take a bath - a bath so hot that it will give me a fever or nearly make me pass out. In case you do not already know this, when you are expecting, you're not supposed to take hot baths. And after the baby comes you have to only take showers for a certain length of time. Um, I'm pretty sure I didn't know that first time around. Oops.

Number six. It is no longer my stomach bumping into things. It is the B's of DOOM. I've put doom in all caps because they are so doominous. Although I'm no longer channeling Pamela. Thank You again, God.

Number seven. Because of my lack of sleep, which is taking its toll after two weeks, my vision is a little blurry and it's hard to read things on the computer.

Number eight. I couldn't wait for Annabeth's umbilical cord stump to fall off. That is, until it did tonight and I almost cried. Why? Why did that make me emotional?

Number nine. Help. I can't stop watching old reruns of 90210 on the Soap Network. I can't decide if this is more or less shameful than all the Days of Our Lives that I watched during my maternity leave when Jackson was born. I had totally forgotten about the character Gina. She is HORRIBLE!

Number ten. My little cheerleader is practicing her moves. Gotta run.

At least you can blame watching old episodes of 90210 on your hormones. I have no excuse, but yet I do it.

I don't think a little hot water is going to hurt your innards. But I'm no doctor.

Whenever I start wishing for bigger boobs, I'm going to come hang out on your blog until the feeling goes away. :)

Love and hugs, beautiful mama!

Give your little cheerleader a hug for me! She is just adorable.

Enjoy your sweet kiddos - they are such a gift from God.

oooh, the pool of sweats you wake up in! i had ALMOST forgotten all about that. i love your annabeth update and the 3-year old update. precious!

Dealt with #3 when I had my first girl as well. The only plus side is that I lost 38 lbs. in the first three weeks after she was born, though I finally resorted to laying a beach towel under me during the night until that unsightly stuff stopped.

#6 -- my full name is "Pamela", and I don't even channel her. I've been Pam all my life. : ) Glad you're back to being Amanda. Such a great Amanda you make!

Good old hormones make us do all kinds of unexplainable things, regardless of whether you've just had a baby or not.

My 13-year-old just told me tonight that she's going to be discipled (mentored) by a 16-year-old in her youth group, and I got all choked up and tears pooled in my eyes. It's tough explaining what it's like being a woman.

So glad to hear all that's new with your little cheerleader!

Andreea said...

Gina? Like the princess? she's/was back? Sorry about that--sudden flashback to the 7th grade. Am glad I no longer watch that though. Hot baths are wonderful. They are one of my favorite things. LOL that you said "Holy dairy cow." Haha! Hugs to yourself and your little prinecess. :)

Congrats on your baby girl :). She is precious! B's of Doom & channeling Pamela--you are too funny :). And the umbilical cord stump? I totally get that. Our baby is now four months old. She is our fifth child and that feeling of sadness with the stump falling off grew with each child. It seems silly, but I understand.

OK, I'm still waking up in a pool of my own sweat. Terrible. And then, while nursing, it's so chilly because my hair is wet.

And I loved Jackson's birthday pictures!

Gotta go to bed.

Kelly @ Love Well said...

Teyla is one, and I'm still waking up with wet pajamas once a week.

What's my excuse? Can hor-mon-ehs be that out of whack?

(I'm totally going to start using doominious. Awesome word. It deserves to have its own trend.)

i was totally with you on the baths i missed those so badly! and..

what is it about shows on syndication and those months after having a newborn... with my oldest i watched all of "Seventh Heaven" cause of hormones, i would find myself crying over the stupidest storyline... then with my second it was "Gilmore Girls" then with my last "Scrubs". I watched almost all seasons with each baby. Hang in there it's only a short season!

Long time lurker here! :) I just had to comment on your precious little girl. I remember sitting at my computer with my now 9 year old on my lap. I didn't have a lap top back then. :) I'm so glad you have a girl now. :) I have two girls, 7 and 9. They are the love of my life.

I'm glad the Bs of DOOM are more manageable now. It will get better. So will the night sweats.

My sister is 39 weeks and scheduled to be induced on Monday. She had an appt today and hasn't changed. So she's resigned to wait until Monday. :)

hmmmm i'm thinking there is a lot more i don't know about the future that one day awaits me in marriage and motherhood. so glad i have some awesome people going before me to pave the way and fill up my notebook of "things to know" :)

Muahahahaha on the t.v. watching. I just advised one of my friends TODAY to watch an hour of t.v. just for herself everyday to combat the baby blues. What I did NOT tell her was back in the day my hour was Days of our Lives!!! I haven't watched in over 10 years, but when I had a demanding baby, I needed some non-baby drama in my life - lol.

Suzi K said...

I have #4's issue and it's 9 months out! Ewww hate it! And talk about "baby bangs" if I posted a picture of mine you would feel so good about yours lol! But it's SO worth it!

I laughed at #9 because I watched all of 90210 season one on Monday and couldn't believe I remembered all their names and every episode! Crazy:0 I wanted to be Brenda in the early years and LOVED Dylan!:)

You youngsters are gonna laugh at this, but i'm 51 years old and i cry at everything and find myself laying in a pool of sweat too. I don't channel Pamela, I channel Maxine with the hangin' mams. I love hot baths but only because they put me to sleep, otherwise, i DON'T sleep!
ahh. the life of a pre-menopausal woman. :-D I'd trade places with you anyday! MY baby graduates High School this year. NOW, that makes ME emotional! And I secretly cried when he started shaving whiskers too.
Forever a mama. didn't want him to grow up, but grow up he did. and now i get to enjoy this Godly young man who still loves me enough to say 'love ya mom', every single time he leaves. I AM truly blessed in the midst of the horror that is menopause!
love you gals!

Amen Amanda and Sunni! it was the worst part for me of being post-pardum. The sweat just kills me. No getting around washing our sheet, pjs, and all every day when I went through it. And yes, the nursing then when freezing cold b/c of sweat -ahhhhh!! Horrible! But there is an end in sight - hang in there!

Lauren said...

Oh my, I can't help but chuckle... Because I'm addicted to the 90210 reruns on soapnet too, I swear that show will never grow old, haha. Loved this post Amanda and love your blog!!!! :o)

When you wake up in a pool of your own sweat, it helps to remind yourself that all the bloating and extra weight is going away .... without exercise! Now that is a fair trade off! :)

The sweats were the WORST! I forgot about that. I am so glad that it is not the middle of summer for you! :)

um yeah i'm preggo, and take semi-hot baths, and i think i started bathing at 3 weeks postpartum with my first. it was heaven. love me some old 90210. and i definitely had those nite sweats. those were HORRIBLE.

Moose Mama said...

I laugh AND cry with you, Amanda. The B's of DOOM and the sweat and lack of sleep will go away....unfortunately as your sweet little one grows up. I always wished baby-hood would last a little longer.

I kept my last child's little umbilical stump in an old pill bottle for awhile. I think I understand. sniff.

Ahhh, someone else that watches the old 90210 reruns on the Soap Network...I am addicted to the point of adding them to my DVR! Without kids and a husband that works away in the oil field it is the only way to pass my time.

I am glad things are going so well...what a sweet blessing.

Brittney said...

Thanks for the heads up Amanda! I will just need a friendly reminder that it will get better, when I am already two weeks in. Only 10 days left for us now and I am just one big ball of emotions and crazy hormones. I am so thankful you share the truth behind the mommyhood glory!!

You are cracking me up! I certainly hope you catch up on your sleep soon! Just this past week I entered the getting up 3 or 4 times a night to visit Mr. Toilet. It's no fun! But if I've learned one thing, I've learned this. When you feel the urge, get up and go. Don't hold it and try to go back to sleep. Because when you wake up you will be hurting because you've got to go so bad. And you have thoughts of whether or not you can even make it to the bathroom before the river lets loose! :) :) :)

Enjoy your baby girl! Before you know it she will be 17 months old and looking like a young woman instead of the baby girl you once knew...sigh.

Prayers and blessings,
Rebecca

I just had my 3rd baby and knew nothing about #5! Goodness! The first thing I did when I got home after having each of them was jump, well not jump, but rather gradually ease myself into the bath tub. With a big box of epson salts no doubt!! Course baths are just what I do. I have to. I have to protect the hair!

I must be breaking the rules. I take 2 baths a day!!!!!!!! I should probably get a bet more guidance. Luckily, I'm only in it for about 10 minutes. Is that really a bath anyways?

Kendra said...

Are you kidding me w/ number 5!?! Just 30 minutes ago I was in the bathroom in my 30-weeks-prego state staring longingly at the tub thinking about what I wouldn't give for a hot bath, daydreaming that as soon as this little girl is born I can take the hottest bath in the universe. And now this! There's a WAITING period afterward. Gracious! :) Thanks for the heads up though - now I can try to temper these hormonal expectations.

Giving up baths for a little longer is probably worth the trade for being able to sleep on your stomach, right? I'm just grasping at something, anything, here . . . I do love me a hot bath.

Why no bath after delivery? I was encouraged by the nurses to soak at least a couple of times a day! It felt soooooo good.

I must say phewy on the bath rule, both before and after. I'm 30 weeks with my third and this pelvis hurts like nothing before... AND after my first, well, warm baths were my healing. Amen to the epsom salts!

Reading your blog is offering me a lot of explanation to things I've experienced the last month but had NO IDEA they were pregnancy related!! Like my body temperature...being cold one moment and then waking up sweaty...why is that?? It's disgusting! I had no idea it had to do with having babies! And why I can't read the time on the clock because it's so fuzzy--I thought I was going to have to go to the eye doctor, but it totally makes sense that it's because of sleep deprivation! Oh yes, and I have gone up another cup size. Are they just gonna totally start sagging at any moment?? Good grief!

I feel like I've totally been enlightened! Hope you have a wonderful day. :)

R said...

FOR. REAL. What IS it about the sweating?! I thought I was the only one. And I don't even nurse, so it can't be that! Wow...that totally changed my perspective to know I'm not the only one who does that. It's so gross!

Wow--your kids' umbies fall off so soon! I think it took a couple of months for my girls' to come off, and I got all weepy about both of them. To the point that the night we threw them away, all I could think about that next morning was that the trash truck was coming to pick up my childrens' "stumps". The only outward physical bodily piece of something that connected us. I was so whacked out on hormones!

Sorry...I didn't mean to make you feel sadder. Just wanted to commiserate and psych myself up for having to go through it again in May! :0)

My baby is 9 months old and I still have the B's of doom....I remember when I was getting fitted for a nursing bra and she just kept on saying the letters until she stopped on one I didn't even know WAS a bra cup size. When I was up in the middle of the night I watched reruns of Roseanne.

what's this about the length of a shower after baby comes?? this is news to me! what are they saying now?!

I, too, have lactose issues. Somehow, they went away mysteriously while I was pregnant with both my babies. Then, came right back again once they were born! (I was onto it with the second one though, and drank my fill of strawberry flavored milk while I could get away with it! I still blame this as the reason I gained 45 pounds during that pregnancy) :)

love your list.

The first few weeks are so hard but yet so amazing all at the same time. I look forward to those first few weeks in early June this year when #2 arrives! I hated the night sweats! UGH! It was September in South Louisiana and we didn't have the ceiling fan on b/c the baby was beside our bed in a bassinet. I ended up buying a little fan for like $10 that I kept beside my bed and it blew right on my face...it was heaven and totally helped the issue. You might try that for a while until things get better.

Sweet baby girl is beautiful. It totally makes me want to have another little girl. We aren't finding out what we're having- so we'll have to wait to see!

Oh, sweet darlin', as you well know from experience, you will look back at these days with sweet nostalgia, but have some great stories involving sweat and 90210.

Quick story about the boob doom - My oldest was 7 when I was pregnant with number 2. One day she walks in as I'm getting dressed - this is late in the pregancy and I'm wearing one of those oh-so-feminine-NOT maternity bras. She wrinkles up her face and asks, "Why are you wearing THAT?" As I start to explain, she pipes in and fills in the blanks about making milk for the baby, boobies get bigger, yadda, yadda. Then she looks up at me and says, in all seriousness. "But, Mom. Your boobies didn't need to get ANY bigger." Thanks, kid. This would be the same child who when being potty-trained busted into the bathroom as I was getting out of the shower. Sitting on the potty, she looks up at me and says, "Hey, mommy. Your boobies are big. Big as your head." Sweet darlin' child. Ugh. I'm sure it was a perspective thing. She was sitting; I was standing. HAD to be perspective. Oh, whatever.

That was so very sweetly written! After the birth of my 2nd child, I also craved a hot bath, exactly that hot, simply because I finally could take one. I don't know if I knew about waiting to take one, either. Oops.
