Help Me With My Weird Frame

I'm so stinking excited right now. Remember a million years ago when I said we were getting a new bedspread? (Here's my explanation for that.) We finally find one today. Curt's mom and dad are here visiting this weekend and my mother-in-law loves Pottery Barn as much as I do. So we made a little trip out there to look around. (Afterward we enjoyed a fun lunch at Paulie's. Yeah!) I still had a bunch of money on my Christmas gift cards to spend. While we were there, Curtis pointed out a quilt that he liked. I was totally shocked. It miraculously works with the color of our crazy-long, hard to replace red curtains, our black furniture, and the blue gray bed skirt and pillows from our old duvet cover that we got so sick of. We brought it home, plopped it on the bed, and voila'! I can't believe that our room finally looks finished after 15 months. I need to buy a couple of pillows to go in the shams and then I'll take some pictures for you.

The only thing I can't figure out is what to do with this weird frame we bought at Ikea last year.

It looks really ugly by itself, but I promise it's cool with our bedroom furniture. You can see what we have here. At the time, I thought I'd put a mirror in it, but I was delusional. It's not a conventional shape, plus we already have two mirrors in the room. I'm not real sure what I was thinking. I put some scrapbook paper in it last year as a temporary fix. Time to figure this bad boy out. What would you do with it? Tossing it is not an option because I like the way it balances my boxy furniture.

The dimensions are:
Width: 23 ¼ "
Height: 33 ½ "
Picture, width: 15 ¾ "
Picture, height: 19 ¾ "

Looks like a perfect frame for a silouhette. Just not sure if you would just want one in your room. Pretty frame!

a beautiful black and white picture of the babies would be gorgeous in it.

maybe you could buy a piece of foam core at Hobby Lobby and cut it with an exacto knife (be careful!) and then cover with a thin layer of batting and then a cool material..like a big bold damask or something that looks good with your quilt but not too matchy..i love the fabrics from purlsoho.com and sewmamasew.com

cant wait to see it all together!
i love it when things FINALLY come together..makes it worth the wait..enjoy!

the other thing you could do is buy corkboard (also at HL they should have a sheet big enough and put in it or paint the foam core with chalk paint! and then paint the frame a bright color like green or something not red..;;;ok, i need to stop!

Amanda,
Here's an idea. We just did this in my mom's guest room and it turned out really cute. We got some scrapbook paper and put the grandkids handprints on it in a complimentary color for the room. You could also do foot prints. It looks great! Just a thought!

Okay.. You could have 2 pieces of glass cut to fit at Lowe's and press a long stemmed flower or a group of smaller flowers between the glass. That way, the wall shows through so it's not too much, since the frame is distinctive on it's own. Just an idea. BTW- You could use special flowers you might have pressed from ones your husband has given you. Or, you might do what I would do-go find some that match the rest of the room.

What about a wedding pic of the two of you?

Jeanie said...

What about getting a silhouette cut of either Annabeth or Jackson and put that into the frame? Our Dillards has a silhouette artist come and cut about every 6 months. This isn't a very quick fix so in the meantime you could print an incredibly neat font of a J (for Jones) and frame it. Or what about printing off a favorite verse in a great font on beautiful scrapbook paper and mounting it in the frame?
Just a few ideas on a hot day in Kansas. I can't think...it's too hot.

Amanda May said...

I have huge black & white prints of my kids/family all over my house, so my first thought would be a big print of your sweet family.

I'm thinking #34/73 from Annabeth's slideshow (your family on the couch).

You could have a 16x20 VERTICAL crop of that image printed...then trim it to fit the oval frame. (You could have it printed in b/w OR leave it in color if it matches the colors in your room).
Within the frame, you guys would be at the bottom...which is super artsy and has even more impact than a centered image.

Okay, sorry for going on & on...I get a little excited when it comes to this kinda stuff! ;)

Here is a link to a post on my blog where I showed some of the pictures displayed in my home...

Let us know what you end up doing! :)

You could always donate it...to ME! I love that frame. Seriously you could print out your monogram in black on card stock and match it with some cool scrapbook paper. Just a thought?!

katie beth said...

Do you have a sweett black and white portrait type picture of Jackson holding Annabeth?

I think something like that would be wonderful...my parents have a photo of my brother and I (from our childhood) in an oval-ish frame. I think I was sort of holding him and my heads is at the top left-ish and his more in the bottom right-ish.

HB said...

I would take your frame to Hobby Lobby or Michael's (or any other frame shop of your choice) and have the framing employee cut you a oval sized mat to fit your frame with two or three other circles within the oval (double matted). You can use your fun oval frame to hold pics of the kids or your hubs and switch them out from time to time. I'd go with three circles and a neutral colored top mat, black bottom mat. I did a little framing in college and loved it. Hope that helps. Been reading your blog for a year or so...love it. :)

boomama said...

Oh, I know EXACTLY what picture you should put in there. You sent it to me yesterday, remember. :-)

And seriously - could you put a piece of fabric in there Maybe wrap a piece of cardboard and with some batting and some fabric and use it as a bulletin board for favorite mementos?

No? Yes? No?

KR said...

If you're handy with photo software..or picasa this is what I would do. Take a great photo of kids, convert it to black and white or sepia and put the hazy glow to it. See picture of my son on my parents hope blog to see what I mean.
If all your pictures are taken with a regular point and shoot camera the pixels may not work on a large print. If the frame is heavy material, a local photo/frame place can put the picture on canvas and do an exact measurement.

I think some scrapbook paper that matches your room would be great with a big J painted a color to match your bedding would be awesome!

bethany said...

Make a silhouette of Jakson or your family and put it inside.
http://awdreyh.blogspot.com/2009/03/silhouette-drawings-tutorial.html
Or you could do one of a picture of your family using the same idea--or maybe one of Curtis holding Jakson's hand.
Hope that made sense.
I've noticed that it's ALWAYS the master bedroom that gets decorated last. We'd just barely finished ours and now we're moving! :)

Stephanie said...

I think scrapbook paper as the background and a great big wooden J painted to match your bedding would be awesome!

Willow said...

Maybe find some fun funky cotton fabric and either use hodge podge or just a spray glue to make it stick to whatever you are using for backing.

I buy a lot of fabric from www.fabricworm.com for my sewing - but of course I'm sure you know etsy has tons too. (she has an etsy shop also. :)

I think that might be a good and inexpensive idea and if you run into the perfect idea later you haven't made a large investment. :)

a silent lurker speaks:

paint the center with chalkboard paint (found in the spray paint/already mixed paint section) using a sponge brush. Make sure you 'season' your paint all over using the edge of the chalk-then write something sentimental (fav verse, wedding date, etc)and tie with a brightly colored ribbon to hang!

Willow said...

oh just thought of another option to make the fabric lay smooth. You could get some interfacing (some call it fabric stabilizer) and iron it on and then cut it the right shape. That way it won't bubble or wrinkle.

Averyswife said...

It looks like the perfect size for a cute baby feet stamp! Maybe if you're creative (unlike me) you can do a print of Annabeth's feet and frame it in there. My second thought was a framed dried, pressed flower.

I love love love pottery barn! It is my favorite store, I just wish it was a little cheaper!

Since you already have two mirrors in the room, I would put a family picture in it! That would be one awesome picture frame. You could get the picture printed on canvas so you would not need glass! (Ask Debra...she knows how to get one!)

Enjoy your weekend. Can't wait to see pictures!!!

Tiff said...

Maybe a black and white photo of your kiddos? Or a print of something floral to go with the scroll look of the frame for added softness in the room? Hard to say without seeing the bedding...

I'm actually not sure why I'm commenting since I never have before, and I am FAR from a decorator... But it's much easier to give suggestions for someone else than to make decisions for myself! :)

Such a cute mirror...maybe some chalkboard paint and then you could change out different scriptures on it. Can't wait to see your pottery barn find!

Lisa said...

Can't wait to see pics of the bedding! I love pottery barn and got our bedding there as well!

For the mirror, what about a monogram? Either paint on on cardstock or order a vinyl monogram and either put it on cardstock or on the wall and then put the frame around it.

Also, if you want to use it elsewhere in your house, but don't like the black, just spray paint it. I bought a similar mirror at a garage sale, but it was gold! I spray painted it white and put it up in my scrapbook room.

Blow up a picture of the kids and cut it to make it fit. Or a picture of you and Curtis if your bedroom is kid free. Can't wait to see pictures!!

Just saw a friend photocopy their family's monogram on a piece of cardstock and put it in a frame almost like yours. Her monogram is actually a "J", too. Very simple, but beautiful. She did it in a cute green color.

I am the least crafty person but what about somehow writing a verse or framing your vows in it? I'm thinking you or someone could write the vows, calligraphy? or a cool font on the computer?

Just a thought.

I can't wait to see the pic of the new quilt!

Sabrina said...

Put a monogram in it! Monograms are great everywhere!!!

Robin said...

What about buying a "J" monogram for your last name and centering it in the frame on the wall? I'm thinking those 3-dimensional ones... or you could buy a wooden one at a craft store and paint it black. Just an idea :o)

The Silva's said...

Amanda, what if you get new scrapbook paper that matches your new bedspread, and with a complimentary paper cut out a big J and add it to the frame? or a really cool black and white pic of the kiddos always works too:)!!

I was going to say write (or have someone write) out a favorite Bible passage--but then I looked at your dimensions and realized maybe it will need to be a favorite CHAPTER of the Bible--that's one big frame! :)

Good luck. Sorry I'm not very creative when it comes to those things but I'm sure some siestas out there will be.

Have a good weekend. And Annabeth's first tea party was too cute!!! :)

tanya said...

What about having profiles made of Jackson and Annabeth? I know she's a little young but it is something that will match and you can put two in the one frame. Just a thought.

If it's too big for a picture (black and white or sepia tone), I'd get a favorite verse, poem or scripture passage printed out in cool font. Just a thought....

What about a sepia copy of your wedding or engagement picture?

Deirdre said...

okay being totally crazy, I would put the face from Snow White's Wicked Queen's "Mirror Mirror on the Wall" in it.

but ...like I said, I'm nuts that way.

You could be totally inspirational and do hand lettered Bible verses. Especially ones that remind you that you are a child of the King and beautiful. Change it out every once in a while too just to keep the inspiration fresh.

You are beautiful to the rest of us too, but we all have mornings where we don't feel that way.

just my two cents.

I don't know if this is an option - but maybe you could get a piece of cork board to cut and fit into the frame and use it to tack notes, photos... whatever you want to tack on it... good idea?? - I don't know :0

Amanda-
You could do a really cool collage of black and white photos. If the back of the frame comes off then I would take it off and either line it with a coordinating fabric or some type of paper and then arrange the pictures on top.

Why not try a silhouette? You could do one of the family, or of a scene you like.

gregandkim77 said...

Ok, go to the local hardware store. Give them the dimensions and get glass cut for the opening if there is one. Then take a beautiful black and white pic of you and your dears and put it in there! You can seal the glass with a clear glue of some sorts.....

robineilene said...

I have this same frame from Ikea.. I'm actually having a baby girl in August, so I spray painted it hot pink, framed some of her fabric, and stuck one of those sticker quote things on the glass.

Now, obviously you wouldn't want to spray paint it hot pink, but I've also seen someone buy a roll of cork from Staples and turn it into a bulletin board. Again, not sure if that's ideal for a bedroom, but just a thought!

I'm not sure I was any help, but that's what I would use it for! :)

Kristen said...

So pretty! Could you maybe buy two other mirrors (smaller in size and maybe a little different shape) and hang them together on a wall, kind of staggered. Not sure if that's what you are going for, but that's the first thing I thought of! Oh wait, it's a frame? Hmmm..could you make it a mirror? Okay, my decorating advice is going to end up costing more money. Never mind!

Shannon Morrison said...

this frame is begging for a silhouette to me.

take jackson and take a digital profile pic, change the size to your liking in a photo-editing program and then tape it on a black linen piece of scrapbook paper. cut around and voila!

congrats on the new quilt!

So I read your post in Google reader then thought and thought about what you should do. Then I came here, all set to be brilliant and tell you to do a black-and-white photo of your kids.

But obviously, I am not brilliant alone.

(I do think that would look awesome, though.)

have you ever heard of uppercaseliving.com check it out. it is vinyl "stickers" as my husband who says we have spent too much on them says. but they are REALLY cool. you could have a double mat done and then place the "sticker" in the center. Maybe bring in some reds or other colors. You could also put your monogram in the middle with your wedding picture in it.. just have the mat cut at hobby lobby or your local michaels! Just a thought!

Wow, this is SO bizarre! I was looking for an oval mirror for our upstairs hallway, and I found a gold one with the same detail as your frame! I painted it black and now it looks almost identical to it.

I would say a silhouette would be gorgeous in it!

KLR said...

I think this almost deserves a poll!
a. Silhouettes of kids
b. Monogram
c. black and white pic of kids
d. contrasting fabric

:) easiest would def be the monogram. but the silhouettes would definitely add to the cottage feel.
my vote is stick a monogram in there til you can get the sil's done!

I am a mom of a 2yr old and I have an 11 week old- right behind you! I feel like your are forecasting my future sometimes! :)

i saw that people have already suggested this- but what about a silouhette of your kids together? There's a place on Etsy that does them, side by side and they are so neat... they're also made out of vinyl, so they'd stick to the wall themselves... the frame could just frame it out... or I like the idea of buying the corkboard & cool fabric and making a pin board... to pin cards, pics, etc on...???

Tara said...

I have to tell you... I am so impressed that you still have money on your gift cards and it is almost July! They burn a hole in my pocket and are spent before the New Year ever hits!

And, yay, for things coming together. Your bedroom sounds beautiful and I can't wait to see the finished photos!

Just one idea that I saw in an oval frame is to take a picture of your family... The catch is that you are lying on your backs with everyone's heads together and the photographer is above you. It turns out so neat and looks great in an oval frame... Just a thought!

Can't wait to see what you decide!

You could buy one of those decal monogram things with a "J" and put it in there. Get it in a color that would match your room. Or if you can get another or 2 more, put pics of your kids, like a silouhette? I dunno, why did I just comment, I think I am exhausted!! I can't wait to hear what you do !

Connie said...

You could print a favorite scripture verse in a pretty font and put it in the pretty frame. My daughter has that and it's so pretty.

The Johnsons said...

I have random/unique frames around our house that I fill with scriptures. I change them out from time to time once I find another verse that might have more meaning to me (depending on what's going on with life, I guess). Maybe you and the hubs can find a verse that is special to you and keep it in your room. Once you get ready for a new one, change it out. Great for memory, too! It would be really cute mounted on some scrapbooking paper, too!

Fiery By Design ✞ said...

Since it is your bedroom I would say do something romantic with it. Put a fav pic of the two of you, get a beautiful outdoor pic done or maybe a fav location that means something special to just the two of you. Whatever you decide to do should be something that makes you and DH smile when you see it. Maybe no one else will know what it means but when you look at each other you'll know. Those are the sparks that need to be revived repeatedly so there's still something there when the empty nest days come. Little "secrets" all our own. Have fun finding that special something for your sanctuary...together. :)

check out uppercase living for a phrase or word that is fitting for the bedroom setting. place a contrast piece of fabric or paper as the back ground under the glass.

Bobbie said...

I love the ideas of using your favorite verse, but you could also add a favorite black & white photo from your wedding and a verse to go with that. You could have a photo printed with the edges featherer out some and the verse printed around the edges. Or even your wedding date. Our DIL is a graphic designer and I've seen her do some spectacular things with photos and printing on them.

Your desk is exactly like one I had my cabinet maker build for our new home. It's a stained wood and in my scrapbook room--I love it. I will have to check out your chairs tho, I sit on a bar stool with no back and that's not too comfortable. Is your sofa from Potter Barn also? I love the color of it--I think you love you some red!! One of my favorite colors for sure.

Keep us posted on what you decide. My decorator curiosity is active now! I love this sort of creativity.

Jan said...

This will sound weird but I've done this before and it works. Don't put anything in it. Hang it on your wall and then put a square or rectangular frame inside it with a picture of your kids etc. Choose a complimentary color as a mat for the picture that matches a color in your bedroom. Sounds weird, but you're really "framing" a framed picture.
Have fun,
Jan

I love how you and Curtis remember your first home so fondly. Where you started and your physical roots as a family of two. I think I would take a picture of that house in b/w or sephia and put it in there. It would tell your unique story just like the frame is unique. My boys are 18 and 21 and when we go back to Starkville MS we bring them by our first home. They are amazed! They love to hear our story and love the whole "In the beginning...." thing.
A way to keep "your" story around.
I would also write on the back of the photo or attach a little piece of paper folded up with information about you guys on it so that somewhere in time your story is with it for future generations.

Picture of quilt please!

Let us all know what you decide!

put fabric in it that matches your room, then, on the glass, find your favorite quote or Scripture and use uppercaseliving.com to make it into a vinyl transfer expression that you can stick right on. (Upper Case Living also has TONS of "stock" phrases to choose from, but I enjoy using the special online tool they provide and making my own to go with a quote or verse that means something to me.)--I'm personally saving up money to make a quote to stick up in my kitchen. It's actually a Beth Moore quote (Jacksonville LPL): "How are you gonna tell somebody there's victory in Jesus when you can't even get victory over a sink of dirty dishes?" :)

C'mon...what kind of a southern girl are you? :) You totally need a monogram in that frame! Seriously, I would choose a cool font (go to dafont.com and type "J" in the sample box to see how your initial looks in the various fonts, then download the best one for free!). Pull the font up in your software and make your J nice and large. Print it on a subtle print scrapbook paper and plop it in the frame.

OR you could print a quote or verse, and switch them out from time to time. Perfect for the memory verse challenge!

OR you could do something like this: http://nestingplacenc.blogspot.com/2009/04/frame-it-framed-fork.html
But maybe with a key?

or
you can make it into one of those picture collage type frames with red and black ribbons and fabric- covered foam
or
you could frame a large photo of your fam by having it drymounted to acid-free foamcore and having it cut to fit along with the glass??? (prob your cheapest route)

Some ideas for you:):)

So many possibilities:

For jewelry:
- place window screen in the frame and hang all your earrings in it.
- put cork board wrapped with batting and wonderful fabric in it and pin some lovely, sparkly pins there
-use the cork board/batting/fabric thing, find some cool pushpins and hang necklaces in it

OR
-put scripture in it!
-go to wordle.net and put in words that have some meaning for you & Curtis...create a word cloud, print and frame it.
-hang it empty on the wall then hang fun things directly on the wall inside it...other small pictures, momentos...I use old skeleton keys, whatever you like.

We went to the Southern Living Idea House out on Mustang Island last week while on vacation, and they had two empty frames hanging on the wall (no backs or glass, so that the wall color showed in the frame) with a white seashell hanging from the top of each frame by a ribbon. So pretty, so simple, and it made a great statement on the wall.

I bet something like that would look great in that frame. What color are you walls? It would be a great way to make it pop a bit more, especially over a little table or night-stand.
