Pre-Historic Valentine

Jackson will exchange valentines with his preschool classmates this Thursday. He's really going through a dinosaur-loving phase, so I was happy to find a box of dinosaur valentines at Target.

Last night's bunco party was Valentine's Day themed and we were all supposed to bring valentines to exchange. Well, let's just say I was done with overachieving after Annabeth's birthday party and the V-Day baking extravaganza. So I grabbed 11 cards out of Jackson's dinosaur box to take with me.

I learned in 5th grade that you should always, always, always go through the cards and make sure none of them says something embarrassing. That year I accidentally and randomly gave the boy I liked a Snoopy card that said, "I want to kiss you, Valentine." Horror.

So I was going through the cards and I found this one.

Okaaaay. No soup for you, prehistoric valentine card! Okay for four-year-olds, not okay for grown women.

The first thing we did at bunco was decorate bags to hold all our valentines. Then everyone started filling them with adorable handmade valentines, heart-shaped brownies, and homemade cookies. I would have felt insecure about my little dinosaur cards but the mental energy I usually devote to succeeding! had been sucked dry along with my ability to care-slash-obsess!

Anywho, this morning Jackson and I had a wonderful moment on the couch together before he went to school. He snuggled next to me and we watched a few minutes of Dinosaur Train on TV. Just before walking out the door, he said with such love and wonder, "When Bibby and Mommy were babies, did they see dinosaurs?"

You cannot make this stuff up, people.

My son Caleb (age 6) asked my husband last week if he had sleeping bags to sleep in when he was in boy scouts...and we are only 35 for Pete's sake!

Too funny!!! My boys are going through a dinosaur stage too. So now I have to plan a birthday party around dinosaurs for my 4 & 8 year old. We bought the same Valentine cards too!

Nothing makes you feel old like a child. Love it.

Tell him you just missed the dinosaurs. Wouldn't it be cool though if they were still around? (well, maybe not)

So cute!!! You need a pick-me-up like my best friend got last night when she served her 5 year old frozen chicken nuggets and cheese puffs. He told her she is the best cooker in the world! :)

Too funny! Dinosaur Train is a fav in our house too!

I was talking to my oldest, who is 6, about roller skating and how I used to roller skate when I was younger. He then preceeded to say that I roller skated when Geroge Washington was around.....gotta love those kiddos!

What a cute story. My son likes Dinosaur Train as well, but we haven't had that question come up yet.

Laughing over Jackson's question.

I have never played Bunko but it always sounds like so much fun when you or Kelly write about it. What a cute idea to decorate your bags and give each other Valentine cards. Love it!

Target also carries a fabulous line of baking pans shaped like dinosaurs.

While discussing my husband's wrinkles the other night, my daughter asked him if we were going to have to throw him away because he's getting old...You absolutely have to love them!!!

Mary said...

No you cannot make stuff like that up. So cute.

Seriously just cracked up. So funny!

That is so cute what he said! I know I asked my grandma what the world was like when it was all black and white after looking at old photos of her. She got a kick out of that.

And the prehistoric card cracked me up. Def not appropriate for older women ;)

I almost never comment here (though I lurk!), but this whole post is awesome. Cribbing Valentines from my kids' stash to hand out while everyone else out-performed me is just so ME. And I'm very comforted that it's you too. There's only so much I can do, people. :-)

Ya gotta love him! You can sure make me smile with stories about him!

I hope he enjoys his Valentine's Day party!

awww..."bless his heart!" :P

What I wonder is did the boy in 5th grade remember it forever and ever and remind you about it?

Oh! You said "see" dinosaurs. I totally read "be." Tired mama eyes... though you would "be" cute" whether you were dinos or not :)

Thank you for this post! So often I just dont do anything at all in fear that I sill stress out too much and go overboard...am I making any sense here? I think we need to worry more about it coming from the heart and try not to worry if it's the best.
ps... Im so exicited about Mrs. Beth's new book! My friends and blog readers are reading and sharing things together already. I even bought my ticket for Atlanta. So exicited!!! Thanks for being so true and real~

When I saw this on twitter this morning I was laughing so hard, and this post has just made my day!

It reminds me of a time back in Mexico when we were teaching the kids the story of Noah, and one of the little boys, after we were done, looked at me with such confusion and said, "Well, we just weren't there when that happened!" Implying that I WAS there. We laughed for forever! Their perception cracks me up. But it's also fun to see it develop.

Kids really do say the darnedest things.

Kelli said...

Don't let him give that one to his teacher... :)

That card would have been too funny last night, especially if Eileen or Dana had received it.

One of Peggy's grand kids, Allie, in all seriousness asked her if she was alive when Lincoln was shot.

JayCee said...

LOL!

When my daughter was younger, she asked me if I was around when Abraham Lincoln was president!~~!

P.S...If you are feeling insecure about your valentines, you can always read this great new book that's out: "So Long, Insecurity...." :)

This is ALMOST as good as when one of my 3rd graders asked me if I rode to school in a wagon...because in the 1980s they didn't have cars. I've also been asked if George Washington was the president when I was born.

I am TWENTY NINE YEARS OLD. That is all.

I had a girl in sunday school class ask me if I was around when God made the sun! Mind you, I was in my early 20s at the time!!! Love the things that kids say! Have a good one!

That makes me laugh! So cute.
And I am super proud of you for taking Dino-cards.
I just don't have the energy this year either. I have always homemade something for the girls to exchange, but I just bought rice crispie treats that you could write on.
It was enough to do glitter on one heart for each of them.

we should get jackson and ellery together...she is really into dinosaurs lately too! in fact, she is constantly bringing in "dinosaur fossils" from outside and loves "dinosaur train"!

Lauren said...

Oh my gosh, I am cracking up at both Jackson's comment and the fact that you took that Valentine to bunco. SO FUNNY! Who got it?

Hey Sweet Amanda... Just wanted to pop in to say that I just saw your Mama tonight at the last booksigning in B'ham.
She was exhausted. I am sincerely praying tonight for her supernatural rest and that she won't overdue it. We love her too much for that. :(
You Moore's so appreciated for all that you give (and give up... because, wow... I'm freshly aware that y'all are one pursued family). Praying for all of you tonight.

I am so blessed by Jackson's thought process as he speaks. My youngest grandson turned 2 years old the same weekend as SSMTC. Your children not only bless you but also me and so many others. Thank you for sharing. Bibby & Mommy may never have seen a live dinosaur but oh the play on words that can bring up for a discussion someday later on with Jackson.

I have to know who got the snoopy card?

Oh my word! I LOVE that ya'll did CRAFTS at Bunco night!!! That is just the cutest thing ever that ya'll made Valentine bags.

I would LOVE a Bunco night like that! Cause, honestly, all that dice rolling, and all those NUMBERS...well that sucks the life out of me the same way math class did in school!!! :-)

Thanks for the heads up on actually reading the valentines cards before you pass them out. My oldest is in kindergarten so I don' think we're in that stage yet. We are in the stage where my son brought home 80 lbs worth of candy and pencils from school today. I didn't get that memo. Sent him off with some sport valentines with his name on them. No loot. No sugar. Where is the elementary school Valentines 101 website? For now, you're it. Thanks. Maybe this is why people homeschool.
