Little House on Jefferson Street

One year ago yesterday, it was monsooning in Dallas/Fort Worth and a huge moving truck was packing up our little house on Jefferson Street. It had to have been the worst possible day to move. Jackson was in child care at our church, I was holed up in the neighborhood McDonald's doing some work, and Curtis was overseeing the packing process. I had never seen it rain like that. Of all days!

There was too much flooding around town and between Irving and Houston to make the drive out of town. All the hotels were booked up because of cancelled flights at DFW airport. We said emotional goodbyes to Janelle and everyone in the church offices that day and headed for Sunni's house. They were sweet to take in our little displaced family on an emotional, stressful, and wet day. She would have been justified in never talking to me again after we brought our nasty, wet dog into their house who had literally been sitting in the downpour for twelve hours.

We spent the night there and the next morning, Jackson, Beckham and I set out for Houston. Curtis stayed behind so oversee phase two of the move. It was a gorgeous, blue day if I remember correctly. Hours later, we met up with him a mile from the house and then pulled up in our new driveway together. It was the end of one wonderful chapter and the beginning of another.

Today I feel grateful and sad. I'm grateful for the life we have here and the incredible things God has done for us in the last 12 months. But I'm sad too. I miss my North Texas friends so much. It's been October since we visited and that was really, really brief. We are planning on visiting in April, but I would need a week to get to see everyone long enough to feel like I was all caught up. I'm not sure what the point of this is. I'm just feeling sentimental today. And I guess I want to say to my friends in DFW, I miss y'all so much! Every single day.

*I detailed the reasons for our move in this post last year if anyone wasn't around back then and is curious.

Here are some pictures of our house on Jefferson Street. This was the first home we owned. It was where we brought our first child home from the hospital. It's what we poured our blood, sweat, tears, and money into for 6 months before we ever moved in. We had a nice little life there, just one block away from our church. God has been so gracious to us.

I totally know how it is to long for your first home. I still feel that way about our house in Springville, UT and we moved almost three years ago!! There's just something about that first place you buy together and the memories there....

What a sweet post. We have been in our home for 14 months now and it is hard to move and leave behind friend and family and a church home. I know you will have so much fun going back in April to visit and this time you are bringing a precious little girl!
Love,
Patty

That is a cute little house you moved out of!

I know how it feels to move away from friends and family! I don't know how far Houston is from DFW but I hope you get to visit soon!

Have a wonderful day!

I feel the same way about our old place. Its hard to move away from a home with so many great memories, but then you move to the new place and create a whole new set of memories. This was such a sweet post!

I'm feeling you! We hit one year in our new place of ministry this week. We actually moved even farther north away from family so from time to time I start missing everyone. I even miss our small little home from our first ministry=) in a strange kind of way.

Thanks for posting. It's been an eventful year!

I just sat there, so many emotions and the day they were loading up the truck it was raining as well! Your house in DFW is super cute and I love seeing the Christmas lights on it! Such a sweet post!

Almost 13 years ago we had our first little house built on Troy Place. I now live in another state, but my mom and I drove by the little house in January when I was visiting. Sweet memories.

Thanks for making me remember :-)

We moved from DFW area last summer after many years in same church, same school, same house...what a privilege to be called to a new place in house and heart. You've certainly honored your God well in losing everyday life with your darling friends. I bet you'll always have their love.

That house is so cute, I love the walkway in front! We've never had the priviledge to own a home but I'm sure I would feel the same way. I've cried everytime we have moved- even when it was just to another apartment complex! Ha. The worst cry was the day we moved out of our little flat above the Baptist Church in our first two years here. I cried moving in becaues I hated it and two years later I loved it! :)

Since I myself am the most crazy sentimental person in our family, I get what you are saying in this beautiful post.
I see why you loved that house - it not only has a darling, beckoning outside appeal...but it symbolizes also the home and family created on the inside.

We were talking in the office this week that it had been a year since the move. You guys are missed very much! I drive by your house sometimes and wish that you were still there!

I moved to Anchorage from Atlanta when we got married and immediately began rectifying the 70's color scheme and texture of the condo my husband owned. It was pretty bad- it's fun to think back to the work we did together. We're military and have moved plenty of times since then. We're up for our second move in 15 months this December (please, Lord, not the Pentagon!)...I haven't even gotten someone out to repair the damaged furniture yet!

Eventhough we were excited to move "home" to Georgia 3 years ago, we still miss our first home together in Ohio. We only lived there three years, so we have lived here just as long, but that's where we brought both our babies home and there is something about your first home that will always tug at your heart strings. Thanks for sharing your trip down memory lane with us.

Your old house was so precious! Everyone loves their 1st house. I miss mine too. :)

I absolutely adore your house Amanda. My hubs and I drive by our first house whenever we can. We don't live in memphis anymore, but when we are there playing baseball with the boys, we'll drive by and just smile.

I think as mommas we will always be sentimental about every crazy thing! :)

Hope your weekend is good!
Hugs,
Fran

Aww! I think of you every time I drive by, and sometimes go out of my way to drive by! We miss you terribly here, but we know that God's taking you where He needs you to be. Miss you, friend.

God has brought you through a lot Little Momma. Each place you have lived, and the people you have met along the way. I wish you could have met my big sis. She moved to Dallas about a yr before you moved to Houston. Ya'll are both sweetheart dolls:)

We miss y'all too! I have such good memories of our fun play dates. I can't believe it has been a year already. Great pictures of your sweet little home on Jefferson Street.

It doesn't seem like a year's already gone by... I remember reading your posts on moving...

I was hoping that missing those you love would get easier after a year, but alas, it doesn't appear that way... there are moments when I am grieving my friends so badly it's paralyzing... but God is good and this is our home now... I just never realized it'd be so hard...

Ps... I read the post above too about being real... thank you.
